They gave ruby masculine pronouns in many non English languages. During the wedding ruby wears a dress and sapphire wears a suit. Thus ruining that and getting it cancelled in many countries

IIRC, in other, less-gay-friendly regions (and to a lesser extent for less-gay-friendly Westerners) they'd gotten away with Rupphire by making Ruby gems ambiguously masculine and never outright confirming them as a lesbian couple. The wedding made that impossible, hence the cancellation.

As others have said, it was indeed the wedding, that caused the cancellation. However, the final season in the movie were so popular that ultimately Rebecca Sugar was able to pitch Steven Universe Future to Cartoon Network as an epilogue mini-series to help properly bring everything to a close. I know you guys a bit confused on that point before but Sugar was as responsible and involved with future as she was everything else.

Steven Universe walked so SO MANY shows a few years later could run! Even if they got canceled for it... it was animation history in the making.

Still so much respect for Rebecca Sugar for going, “they are getting married, even if the series has to end”

The wedding is the storyline they were talking about. Cartoon Network didn’t want the wedding storyline at all but the creator(Rebecca Sugar) decided to keep it so Cartoon Network made this the last season.

Yes, it was the wedding that caused Cartoon Network to cancel the show early, but Rebecca Sugar sees themself as Ruby, their partner as Sapphire, and Garnet as a representation of their own relationship, and Rebecca and Ian Jones-Quarty got married around the same time, Garnet's marriage was incredibly important to Rebecca Sugar.

I don’t know if you all remember but in episode 20, Sapphire was looking into the future in her visions and at one point she yelled ‘Why is she a cowboy?!’ ? that was hilarious!
