IIRC, in other, less-gay-friendly regions (and to a lesser extent for less-gay-friendly Westerners) they’d gotten away with Rupphire by making Ruby gems ambiguously masculine and never outright confirming them as a lesbian couple. The wedding made that impossible, hence the cancellation.

However, the final season in the movie were so popular that ultimately Rebecca Sugar was able to pitch Steven Universe Future to Cartoon Network as an epilogue mini-series to help properly bring everything to a close. I know you guys a bit confused on that point before but Sugar was as responsible and involved with future as she was everything else.

I don’t know if you all remember but in episode 20, Sapphire was looking into the future in her visions and at one point she yelled ‘Why is she a cowboy?!’ ? that was hilarious!

Steven Universe walked so SO MANY shows a few years later could run! Even if they got canceled for it… it was animation history in the making.
