You guys really undersold this transformation to Boom. Like Dragon Ball Z has huge pacing issues but the most iconic transformation in anime isn’t one of them.
Goku isn’t naive, he just tries to see the goodness in people plus pretty much all of Goku’s friends were once his enemies, but once he showed them kindness they changed for the better.
H-Man is mostly right about the dub change for Goku’s “hope of the universe” speech to make Goku seem more heroic. However, the Japanese version is less about Goku’s love of fighting and more about Goku accepting that he is, in fact, a Saiyan, and now he’s going to use that power to defeat Frieza. Goku’s not a super complicated character, but coming to terms with his heritage is something he had struggled a bit with ever since he learned he came from a race of ruthless planet-conquerors.
