As an Atheist, I always enjoy Biblical stories, because I like to think about what the real story was that they're based on. Even you break down the story of Moses, and take out the religious assertions of God, then it really becomes a story about a Slave rebellion. Because if God didn't cause those plagues, then the slaves did. They poisoned the crops, and the food, and blamed a plague. Then murdered the first born of all their captors, as revenge for the same being done to them, before escaping. But of course, when it came time to write the story about this, it was God who did all that nasty stuff, not the people. It just goes to show you how God tends to be used as a scapegoat for the atrocities that humans do.
In ancient Egypt magic was very, very common. Lots of priests, doctors, etc., did magic, it was considered part of everyday life, more or less.
If you liked this you should check out Joseph King of Dreams. It was made in 2000 and it's a prequel of this movie about the story of Joseph
It was god killing those children he was just using Moses as a messenger
All that mutt stomping reminds me of Year One with Jack Black and Michael Cera.
The story of Moses, Superman and Goku, they get send away by their parents, they get strong and when they get older they fuck shit up!
dudes u will have so much fun with Sinbad if you like the old school animations.
if you do any more religion movie try Jonah: a veggietales movie...i do believe you will have a fun time either laugh with or at us
I gotta say it. If you love the animation in this movie you NEED to watch Treasure Planet. You would be missing out on one of the most BEAUTIFULLY animated movies of all time.
Did Boom somehow mix up Moses and Noah?!
As today is literally the start of Passover, do they not know this is a Jewish inspired film? Christianity is not a part of this particular story.
RIP Val Kilmer!
In the book of Exodus, it was the Pharaoh’s daughter not his wife that adopted Moses. It never says what Ramses relationship was with Moses, it doesn’t even mention him at all until the old pharaoh dies and he takes his place, and even then it is never by name. They made them brothers in this for dramatic effect and it works well.
Also, the princess realized Moses was an Hebrew immediately but took him in anyway.
Back then it was common for rich women to pay poor women to both breast feed and raise their children. Finding someone to take care of a kid was simple enough, but finding someone who had had a baby recently enough to still be making milk was harder. When Miriam saw the princess take her brother in, she saw an opportunity to help her mother. She asked the princess if she wanted a nurse for him. So his own mother got paid to help raise him for a time.
It is never said how Moses found out he was a Hebrew. It is assumed either his bio-mom or adoptive mom told him. I like this movie’s scene with his siblings and Moses spiraling as everything he thought he knew about himself was upended.
YESSS. PLEASE DO MORE! El Dorado, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Sinbad!!
"Part the sea for me Daddy" Had me laugh-crying on that one! Man, Ruth would probably love Poseidon from Epic: The Musical
All of your heckling was fine by me! Lol Exodus is like the Abraham Lincoln of the Bible. Everyone's favorite but we still have a sense of humor... I'm sure someone said it but Val Kilmer played both the voices of Moses and God...then he (the actor) lost his voice to throat cancer in 2014. Eerie.
So I should point out, that there *has* been "Bible the anime" but it's an interpretation of Christianity that is in no way accurate to the books and is actually a cult thing as it puts the dude that made the show as being essentially more powerful than every other god and it's a whole thing. Mother's Basement on youtube did a deep dive on it. it's called Happy Science
Fun fact: It took 4 years for the animators to do the whole parting of the red sea.
This movie as well as the Ten Commandments is why Exodus is my favorite part of the Bible.
Christian here this is one of the best movies ever done with the bible. the only thing I would request is that you also react to The Ten Commandments too because that is one of my favorites and is honestly better than even this movie.
yall should check out the joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat movie aswell, its pretty similar and also beautifully done even speaking as a non religious person
this movie is beautiful. one of Dreamworks best movies.
I'm Jewish. This movie is not religious to me, it's just my culture on screen (I get teary eyed every time they say something in Hebrew), and I watch it every year before Passover.
I don't know if y'all planned it this way, but you released this the week before Passover, so now I get to watch it w/ you guys!!
To think this was the first movie DreamWorks did
Oooo been waiting for this. I'm not even religious and this is one of my favorite movies of all time ❤️❤️
Noah is the one who built the Ark and 2 of each animal, not Moses!!
You guys probably got a high request to watch this movie because Val Kilmer recently passed away the other day
I'm by no means religious, I've actually become somewhat anti-religion in recent years, but this is one of my favorite animated movies.
BOOYAH
for one of the songs i was just staring at Sean waiting intently to see if he was gonna notice (or say out loud if he did) that the priests were played by Steve Martin and Martin Short lol
I'm not religious, but damn this movie is still so good. The music is
wonderful and the art is lovely. There is also a Bible anime out there,
that I remember watching when I was super young--including the
VeggieTales series, but my favorite religious series I watched from then
to now is probably Moral Orel. XD
What is odd, after rewatching the
Thor movie so recently, made me realize that Loki's story is very
similar to Moses', if he actually had a support system when he realized
he was adopted and didn't freakin' spiral like Rameses did.
no one reacting to the Casey Anthony joke. its ok Boom I see you
PLEASE, watch the Ip Man movies with Donnie Yen. You guys would really like them
This story and the holiday behind it are really creepy and groomy and one of the things that drove me away from religion
I know one commenter that's going to lose his goddamn mind
Val Kilmer gave up his life to get the crew to finally watch this.
Lowkey perfect time of the year to watch this right before Passover
I love how when Moses discovers that the Pharaoh killed a ton of Hebrew children, it's a turning point for him, and he stops calling him father. But when the Hebrew God does the same exact thing to the Egyptians, he's like, nah, I'm cool with it.
it's even crazier when you look at the source material, where Ramses wanted to free the slaves, so god hardens his heart and makes him refuse as an excuse to bring the plagues
Old testament big man was a petty and jealous God. The whole point of the plagues and angel of death was never to convince Pharoah of anything. It was vengeance. Turn the other cheek was a Jesus thing.
I'm not religious but i've always loved the stories from the Bible and such, this is one of my favourite movies, i really hope you do "Joseph King of Dreams" too
This is a particularly disturbing story if you read the original, pharaoh wanted to free the slaves, but god wanted to do the plagues, so he hardened pharaohs heart. Then while Moses is in the process of freeing the slaves, god just decides he wants to kill Moses and so his wife circumcised him and offered his dick skin as a tribute
It is perfect albeit bittersweet timing seeing The Prince of Egypt. It's always an awesome day to enjoy this absolute marvel of a movie, but so sad for the passing of Val Kilmer. I'm so grateful he lent his voice to such an enduring masterpiece.
According to the Old Testament, there were Egyptians who converted during the plagues and left with Israelites. There were other Egyptians who just gave them goods as they left--like paying them to leave and take their vengeful God with them. As the Song of Moses says--Yaweh is a Man of War.Good film. Great music. Not gonna lie, when i got the notification I was like 'who convinced these idiots to watch this? This is gonna be a mess 😂" But glad y'all enjoyed. It is a work of art.
Don't really get all the Christianity yap, this in itself is just a Hebrew myth from the Torah, New Testament came later as a weird retcon DLC. Old Testament Yahweh was more of a eccentric stubborn personality with weird flexes like that all the time. He sure claimed to be the creator, but is most often portraited as one of several legit gods, just very powerful. The movie called him out on leaving his clan to suffer for generations, and Exodus implies heavily that he PURPOSEFULLY MADE pharaoh more bitter, just to prolong the punishment. Sidenote; check out the Book of Job, that shit is absolutely unmoral and insane.
TLDR; Old Testament God was a whole other beast and this movie doesn't have to be "Christian" in any way
i mean Sinbad would be nice to see too because it really underrated
imagine them watching watershipdown
Here’s to hoping that El Dorado and Joseph and Spirit are coming next in the Dreamworks 2D animation era!
And Sinbad. And the rest of She-Ra!
Honestly suprised no one said it yet but here's a fun fact for you. Prince of Egypt was being animated at the same time as Shrek. Any animators who's work was not good enough to work on the Prince of Egypt was sent to work on Shrek as a punishment. Also Moses exists in the beyblade universe and he split the sea with a beyblade.
Rameses is Voldemort!!
i need "Joseph: King of Dreams" movie now... so good
What an absolute classic! One of the movies that are must-watch if there is even one kid in your family.
Yes!! I was one of the many people recommending this movie. It's a beautiful retelling of the Moses story and one of the few religious films that can be enjoyed even without having a tie to a particular religion. The music, art, and especially the animation was gorgeous the whole way through, and it still makes me a bit teary here and there.
.
On the note of The Bible But Anime, the only thing that came to mind was a comedy called Saint Young Men in which Jesus and Buddha share an apartment in modern day Japan. I've watched a lot of it a long time ago, and I recommend it strongly since it's hilarious (it's pretty much exclusively a light-hearted comedy).
Fun fact: the scene where Moses parts the Red Sea took the animators 2 years to animate. THAT ONE SCENE TOOK 2 YEARS!!
And this was well before how long it would take before The Spider-Verse Films took to make the trilogy!
If I remember correctly the reason Moses spent 40 years in the desert was because when they reached the promised land it was occupied by a large people. Rather than trust in God the people were afraid and didn’t want to enter, so as a result God had them wander in the desert until all those who refused to enter the promised land died.
In Avengers age of Ultron if there’s a biblical reference when vision answers the question I am that I am
This movie really solidified to me that even though I'm a pretty staunch atheist, I have to admit the bible as a book has banging stories
There are some Bible anime actually. From the eighties and nineties, there's series like The Flying House, Superbook, and In the Beginning: The Bible Stories, and then more recently there's stuff like the My Last Day short film. Not exactly reaction material, but just kinda lowkey neat to know exists. Honorable mention also to the Manga Bible, made by a guy who also worked on Judge Dredd and then made a book called Batman is Jesus.
You don't exactly need to be religious to enjoy this movie. It's still a great animation and storytelling otherwise and as the others pointed out, it feels like it's more about retelling a mythological story rather than forcing a belief, hence why I love this movie so much (and the soundtrack is amazing!) I'm not really religious myself, but I've been recommending you guys watch this for that reason :D
Moses? Nah that’s Voldemort
As a former Christian, I love this movie for more of an artistic and animated storytelling aspect than it being about Christianity. I also love it as a retelling of mythological events than pushing the “become a Christian” agenda. This movie has aged really well in terms of animation, effects, storytelling, and art imo.
Not exactly "Bible: the Anime" but The Chosen series does a decent chunk of the New Testament well, might be fun to react to.
I am all for them watching The Chosen. I'm interested in their commentary
As an adult I'm non-religious but it's funny that every time I watched this movie as a child, I convinced myself that religion is cool and that the church was good
"I don't think we were made to watch religious movies, yall." If you want one a lot more your speed, I highly recommend Dogma. Fucking hilarious.
Guys I'm gonna blow your minds right now: the fact that superman was created my two Jewish men...Moses and Rames are the original Superman and Lex Luthor. And the baby Basket is the Rocket ship. 😊👍🏼
In honor of Val Kilmer.
RIP Val Kilmer
i did find this loke ironic because in the bible it showed the consequences of having slaves but then american settlers used it against african slaves to keep them under control, just shows how easily people can manipulate religion to what they want
So for the plagues, they were direct attacks on all of Egypt’s gods. And the reason Pharoah caved at the last plague was because the firstborn was seen as the gateway and entrance to the afterlife. So now the Egyptians think they will never experience life after death, which is the most sacred thing to ancient Egyptians
I bet people requested this one cuz Passover starts next weekend, though it could well be a coincidence
Also Val Kilmer the voice of Moses passed this week :( RIP
One thing I find craziest in the story of Moses, is that The burning bush tells Moses that the Pharoah will not listen to his words because God will not allow the Pharoah to change his mind. So God just wants an excuse to kill people and wants to make Moses watch
Nah, truly one of the best animated movies of all time. The reason this was so heavily requested as of late is just because this movie is getting the love it deserves from the internet. It truly is a unique film.
"Maybe we're not meant to watch religious movies."
Y'all could just...not make everything a big joke? I get that you're not religious, I'm atheist as well, but you don't have to make the reaction "hahaha fuck god" the entire movie bro. I guess the concepts of faith, belief and redemption go over some people's heads.
moses mom lullaby still gives me chills i used to love it as a kid
If y’all watch this you got to watch Joseph king of dreams, it’s another very good movie, it’s kinda of like a prequel to this
Love seeing a movie centered in Egypt that has characters that actually look Egyptian. Hollywood loves casting Europeans as Ancient Egyptians. SMH
Except now they'd probably be sub-saharan black tbh, for whatever reason that seems to be the popular choice now. It swung from one incorrect representation to the other
I am a very stout and firm atheist, but this movie fucks hard.
I was not expecting this reaction and I love it. Prince of Egypt is an amazing movie.
Fun fact about the woman singing in the beginning, she actually sung her song in 17 different languages. Her voice actor sadly passed away in 2000, but the fact she put that much work in almost 20 languages for this is impressive and some other word I don’t even know how to describe
Love this movie a lot the soundtrack is elite 💯❤️
Oh! I wanted to point out how interesting it was to me that there were so many *storm* elements when God was around. Yahweh was thought to originally be one of many gods in the Hebrew religion, and specifically a storm god.
This is one of my favorite animated movies and probably the only adaptation of a christian religious story that I love. I was obsessed with ancient Egypt as a kid, and grew up with Baptist parents. The animation, the story between the brothers, and the soundtrack all come together so wonderfully. I also thought Tziporrah was hot because I'm gay af 😂
Probably the only time i liked a religious movie growing up
OHHH MY GOD FINALLY im commenting before i even watch IM SO HAPPY. ONE OF MY FAVE MOVIES...
And cue the loop of "Plagues" getting stuck in my head yet again for the unforeseeable future!
The second half of this movie is actually just Moses' heat stroke/dehydration hallucination as he dies in the desert 😔
I don’t believe they’re using real magic its most likely alchemy. Which can have real effects, such as making smoke and flashes of light. They slapped the staffs together making a flash which I think they used as cover to swap for snakes or the movie wanted to show real magic.🤷♂️
And then we have events such as the red algae in the water making it look like blood or volcanic activities causing the water levels to change enough for people to walk across it
Loved the movie but I couldn’t hear you at all for parts of it over the audio
I think with this movie it's a lot better to not view it as a religous movie but a movie retelling a mythological story that isn't trying to push a belief.
Thought that's clearly not what it was intended as. The fact they opened with the text about artistic license but trying to stay "true" shows a clear affiliation with religion.
the joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat movie thats done in the same style was also great
great movie and music
I was not waiting for this and I'm so happy omg
Dont know if a reedit is possible but the movie audio is way louder than yall
A culture that believes in hundreds of gods including some gods of magic are gonna believe in magic
I could cry!!! I have been requesting this for soooo long!
Fun fact: they had the whole cast play the voice of God, layered over each other
You make the joke moses aged after seeing the bush
In the bible he literally aged 40 years after seeing gods face when told not to (basically constantine scene during the exorcist in the beginning)
I just watched it this week again and thought “they should definitely react to it”
RIP Val Kilmer who was the voice for Moses in this movie
I find it awesome they happened to watch it after he died
Can't hear you guys
Awesome reaction, but can't here you guys over the sound of the movie lol
I thought that it was my audio setup, glad to know that i'm not the only one that could barely hear them which is shame since this was such a highly requested reaction for them to do xD
Hopefully they come out with an audio fix.
This is one of the best animated movies of all time hands down. Every frame was hand drawn.
