Yeah, Shymalan wanted to change the names to sound more akin to the way they would be pronounced in some Asian cultures. To be more authentic. And then he cast white actors as the Asian and Inuit protagonists.
Also, of all the things that bothered me about this movie, one that stood out was the way Firebenders needed a source of fire. My understanding was that in the show, one of the reasons the Fire Nation was so powerful was because they can create fire from the air, they don’t need fire handy the way Earth and Water benders need their elements around them. Also why they specifically imprisoned the Earthbenders on a metal ship, so the Earthbenders had no Earth to bend! That was the point of the motivational speech, was to inspire them find power without the Earth! Ugh!

My biggest annoyance with this movie was how they altered the names. Also it felt rushed, it didn't flow at all.

I have a very vivid memory of talking with a random lady in the theater as the credits rolled for this movie. My siblings and I were astounded by how bad it was but as children we had no idea how to identify how bad it was. The lady in front of us ended up asking us if the anime was better and we had to explain to her just how amazing the anime was when we realized this movie had been her introduction to the avatar franchise.

I saw an interview with M Night Shyamalan back when this movie was coming out. Apparently this movie was his idea, which he came up with because his daughter loved the show. He also said he changed the name pronunciations on purpose because he thought they sounded better that way.

Changed name pronunciation because he thought it sounded better.
Changed races of the cast because he felt it was better.
Changed how firebending worked because he wanted to add his signature "twist" which was Iroh being able to create fire from nothing.
Bro thinks he is a god who is always right and that things are better HIS way rather than the way that was proven successful and beloved by millions.

Yeah, I was willing on taking a shot on the movie but then the earth bending came and that combination all for one rock to gracefully float in the air and I was done with it. Later I realized that that was an awful prison camp too, they're were my boulders, STILL on the earth and able to be free at any time! And the fire bending looks good in forms but the whole thing where they need a source makes me feel the screenwriter (maybe Shamalan idk) never even watched the first episode diligently, cause Iroh literally says that the breath extends past the limbs and turns into their flame. It's so awful! Still got to watch the netflix version, work's been keeping me busy then I'll catch your guys' reactions on it!

I had to watch this in two parts while doing my homework or household chores, because (genuinely, even with y'all's disbelief and fun commentary) this movie just bores me to tears. I saw this movie in theaters with my sisters when I was in high school. We all love ATLA. We could all recognize just how crap this movie was, and we were the only ones in the theater, too. Now, after studying writing, literature, adaptations, etc., I love adaptations. I love seeing how they're handled. This movie is even more of a train wreck than when I saw it the first time around to the point where it went from pure boredom to sheer awe. Iroh's actor had some nice takes and showed genuine emotion at least, but hey, at least "the effects were decent." :)

This movie is awful, but the effects are decent. XD Very much like they said for the episode when the gang watched their own play.
Also, regarding the names... While it is correct that they're mispronouncing it as they did in the show, the pronunciation they're giving names like Iroh, Aang, and Sokka, are actually the correct way, making the show incorrect. I was never too bothered by it as a kid, except for when Mai came into the series, knowing it should be pronounced as "My" not "May." XD

I'm going to watch this when I have more free time. It will acctually be the first time I watch the full movie. Back when this came out I was in highschool and me and a buddy went to go see it on free movie Tuesdays (where optimum customers got 2 free tickets a week on Tuesdays) we walked out of the theater and asked if we could exchange the free tickets for another movie and at first the guy behind the counter didn't let us until we told him it was Avatar we went to see. He just gave a sad nod and then asked what other movie did we want to see. He said it was probably the biggest let down of his life and the biggest waste of money. So this will be the first time I acctually even watch it in full.

Just one other comment. Live action ATLA movie, really had me intrigued to see this. And I think for a movie poster, it does look really cool. That's likely what got me to go to theaters to see it. Probably the best part of the movie is the poster, and the trailer for the movie. It does make the movie look a lot more interesting than it is, and looks good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-egQ79OrYCs

Like I don’t even know how this movie got funded it was that bad. Also, I'm glad this new Netflix show can redeem ATLA for live action. I just hope this movie is forgotten with time, or if not, I at least hope it no longer is people's first experience to seeing the ATLA story. Animation would be best, but if the new Netflix LA series is what people see first, that's acceptable... just not this movie.

Yay! You did it! I'm so proud of you for going through with watching this trash of a movie! Now you can finally erase it from your memories and never think about it again!
Also so the kid at the earth bender prison camp that you thought was a girl was Haru. The boy Katara befriended in the Imprisoned episode. Sadly enough, I don't even blame you for not realizing it cause he did look like a girl and they never mentioned his name in the movie.
Another huge flaw that you didn't bring up was that Aang (sorry Oong) said that as the Avatar, he can never have a family which is not true cause Avatar Roku had a wife. Also apparently in the movie you need tools for bending which makes no sense. Also Ozai doesn't look intimidating at all. He doesn't have his pointy beard or long hair or crown and he just looks bored. It's like the actor knew he was acting in a shitty movie lol. Also Zuko's hair was all wrong. He didn't have his shaved head and high ponytail. I could go on and on with the amount of problems this movie had. Important thing is that again, you finally did it and I'm proud of you guys! Now you never have to watch it again!
