I will forever stand by the fact, that initially ironwood was kinda right. salem getting the relics means the end for EVERYONE by raising atlus up where she couldnt get the staff, meant salem couldnt get it, then they could travel atlus over to vacuo to plan and regroup, while saving as many citizens as they can while achieving that goal, team rwby decided they needed to save everyone in mantle as well, which put a greater risk of salem getting the staff and being one step closer to getting all 4 relics, by trying to save everyone in mantle, instead of just some like ironwood was trying, team rwby put a huge risk that the end result would be the planet dying. infact many of the issues that happen this season, that allows salem to get footholds, come from team rwby and ironwood fighting, which in itself was also influenced by team rwby repeatedly lying to ironwood who has developed trust issues. And lastly it was explained on a livestream that aired between volumes 7 and 8, that ironwoods semblance is called "Mettle" and is basically an always active semblance that essentially gives him hyper tunnel vision to achieve a goal he desires even if he doesnt want his semblance on, whether that be ignoring the absurd pain from ripping is arm out of watts's rings, or shutting off all guilt and emotions to achieve the goal of saving atlus and stopping salem from getting the relic. While i agree the last few episodes ironwood went too far, its all because of his semblance driving him to more and more extremes as his goal gets further away

The Ace Ops have spent much of their lives under the thumb of Ironwood. They've lead very strict, commanded lives, being fed nationalist propaganda about how great Atlas is for who knows how long, where what they know is taking orders like any other soldier and being praised for it. Combine that with the fact that this is a very stressful situation that's going on, they're obviously scared about what to do and don't really know any other way other than following orders.
This is not an excuse for their choices, but more to give an understanding of why they make the decisions they do.

Also, the staff spirit's name is probably a reference to Merlin, who's called Merlin Ambrosius in some versions of Arthurian lore

In case there’s any confusion about Penny becoming real, team RWBY essentially exploited a loophole in the rules: they had Ambrosius remove Penny’s soul from the robotic parts. Ambrosius is not allowed to destroy, and since a soul with no vessel would be destroyed immediately, he was forced to create a human body for Penny’s soul to continue to exist. The robot Penny disappeared because that was technically the only thing they requested to be created.

Yup, to be even MORE clear (because I remember struggling with understanding the explanation), the "can't destroy" rule only applies to the request, but it doesn't apply to Ambrosius, so them not explicitly telling him to create a body but just letting him do it on his own is what let her not be destroyed when they had him create the central location.

Y'all ain't ready for the finale. Volume 8's finale is fucking intense, and then the wait time between volume 8 and volume 9 was BRUTAL! Also, yes, Penny was 100% Pinocchio (even down to a blue fairy turning her human) and I find it funny you guys have started calling Nora Thor (or are you saying Thora?) because all of team JNPR are based on mythological characters, or historical figures, that famously cross dressed, Jaune is Joan of Arc, Pyrrah was Achilles, Ren is Mulan, and Nora is Thor.
