I cant wait for the third one bc i can't stand Johnny Depp's Gellert Grindelwald, he looks like a disney villain, I much preferred Mads Mikkelsen portrayal, is more down to earth and less Edward Scissorhands, outside of that all 3 movies are amazing

Recently became a member and had a little question, there might be an obvious link I'm missing but is there a way to just get the audio of the commentary only as in without the movie audio? I like to watch along with my own copy (4k 7.1 sound), I can watch my 4k copy fine but have to mute the 7.1 sound to avoid double audio of the movie so it like 4k with stereo sound.

There is no separate audio because that would be impossible to get in sync since they pause so much. Unfortunately you'll have to watch along with them.

There was supposed to be five Fantastic Beasts movies, but because of JKR's opinions Warner Bros. decided to scrap the movies after 3. It's also the reason Tina's actress doesn't appear in the third movie.

Earlier newt mentions that the venom he is extracting from the Swooping Death beast has obliviative qualities but only on negative memories, he dosnt bring this back up at the end when he gives it to frank.

Our boy Jacob diddnt have many bad memories from his time in the wizarding world and remembered all the creatures he met!

In addition to autism- because Newt he's definitely showing telling signs of it- I noticed (in his very special interest of magical beasts-which would not be considered normal at this time or even widely accepted as most wizards just wanna exterminate magical beasts rather than understand them- which is shown by Tina early on when Newt says something about his book on magical creatures and Tina asks if its an extermination guide--), that he may also not look at people in the eye often or do it in a shy or odd looking way because he knows most wild animals do not take kindly to being stared at or having their gaze met as it is a sign of aggression or challenge in a lot of animals... if he has been doing this for some time it would make sense that he just automatically does that to be on the safe side anyway... honestly it's good rule of thumb for humans too. Newt did say humans were the most dangerous.

The Fantastic Beasts movies are a bit of a mess, this movie is a fun time, but the next two are all over the place. Also some castings are amazing like Jude Law and some people are severely miscast like Johnny Depp. Jacob is awesome though, easily the best character in the series.

They were fine. I never understood the hate they received,  aside from recasting JD. As a conduit to tell Dumbledore and Grindelwalds' story, I thought they were perfectly fine. Truth be told, I've had much bigger problems with the Harry Potter series, despite some of the "generic" parts of the 2nd and 3rd film of Fantastic Beasts.

It's really interesting to me, because I never once even considered blaming Tina or being annoyed with her when I first saw this movie. maybe I'm just more gracious than most people. But I saw where she was coming from and why she did what she did, and it all seemed well-intentioned. And News seemed to understand that too and not hold any resentment towards her for it, so I just kind of got on Newt's page I guess.

I agree with you. And I honestly don't know why they were yelling at her and hating on her for rightfully apologizing to Newt. She knew she messed up and that she shouldn't have ratted Newt out, she genuinely felt awful for what she did. She's wasn't a heartless jerk, she was just super uptight. She just wanted her job back when it was wrongfully taken from her, but she just went about it the wrong way. She needed to loosen up and she needed to wake up and realize that MACUSA doesn't actually give a damn about her. In my opinion, it honestly would have made more sense if they yelled at her when she sat on the case locked them in.

little random fun fact - J.K. Rowling has stated that Luna Lovegood married Newt Scamander's grandson, Rolf Scamander. They had Luna end up with Neville in the movies, but that's not true to what Rowling wanted for her.

The books you looked up must be the Screenplays, because JKR wrote the script of the movies for the movies, they weren't books. The original "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them" was written by her but it was literally just Newt's textbook, and it's a fun alphabetical encyclopedia without a plot, though I recall each entry comes with short descriptions/tales about the beasts from Newt's experience (I barely recall). I loved reading it as it was "Harry's copy" and had Ron and Harry's personal graffiti/scribbles on the pages as easter eggs, including a game of hangman but few illustrations. This movie had some beasts from that textbook, which included many mentioned in the original books, especially ones cut from the movies, but also some new ones. And the textbook has many beasts never mentioned in the books or any movies.

For examples off the top of my head, the Demiguise's fur is used to create Invisibility Cloaks. I think Lovegood had an Erumpet Horn in his house, and it blew up. Bowtruckles prefer trees with wand-worthy wood.

Also, I could be wrong, but the "death sentence" that Tina and Newt escaped- I'm pretty sure it was a pool filled with "draft of living death": the same potion Harry successfully brewed during Slughorns class that earned him his vile of liquid luck in book/movie 6!

"He [Newt] and Hagrid would have gotten along so well!" Please, someone, correct me if I am not remembering this currently, it's been a while lol, but I believe the pretext for this was "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" written by Newt is one of the Textbooks Hagrid uses in his Magical Creatures class at Hogwarts (again, not this takes place decades before the events of Harry Potter). or something along those lines, then it became a real "textbook" to further expand the world that later manifested into this movie franchise to both emulate that all while giving some of the histories between Dumbledor and Grindelwald in "the first war", decades before even Tom Riddle or the Potters were born.

I've said it already, but I've got a real soft spot for this movie. I'd have liked it anyway, I'm sure, but my father had frontotemporal dementia, and this released around the time he had become nearly non-verbal. For a long while it was one of his favorite to watch, even though he couldn't understand most of what was being said.

I deeply dislike Crimes of Grindelwald for the opposite reason: he could not understand that movie at all (because it's borderline *incomprehensible* at points) and it upset him, I think because he felt the reason he couldn't understand it was because of the dementia. As above, I don't think I would have liked it even without that element, but because of it I've got a grudge.

All of that said, I also haven't watched it since it released, and there were elements of it that I enjoyed, so I look forward to seeing it again with a few years' distance.

Also, the medallion Graves/Grindelwald gave Credence having the symbol of the Deathly Hallows is a nice touch, particularly after the identity reveal. Almost none of who he was made it into the last two Harry Potter movies, but Grindelwald was obsessed with the Deathly Hallows, and by this point *should* have the Elder Wand.

At least for the next one, I think they'll definitely enjoy it. They're pretty easily entertained. I'm a lot like them in that regard, and when that movie came out, I remember finding it pretty fun and entertaining, even though I had a few minor things I didn't love about it. I have a lot of issues with them and dislike the motivations behind the next two movies, but if you just go into the movie looking to be entertained, I think it would definitely do the trick, if you aren't too caught up in canons and stuff. I can't speak to the third one, though, since I boycotted it because they fired Johnny Depp, so watching with them will be my first watch.

NGL seeing y'alls faces when Credence revealed himself as the Obscurial was IMMENSELY satisfying. Guess the writers did a good job laying that trap to make you think it was Modesty. At the very least it certainly had Bree completely stumped.

A good way someone put the difference is, having a griffindor as a main character and a hufflepuff as one. Newt is a hufflepuff. His story is not focused or concerned with a king Authur style narrative. Still good. Just not that kind of story.

I don't know if you guys remember, but Gellert Grindelwald was in Harry Potter, mentioned a few times in Deathly Hallows. He was the thief who stole the Elder wand in the memory.

An Obscurial is a witch or wizard who has repressed their magical abilities, often due to fear or external suppression, such as being forced to hide their magic in an environment that does not tolerate it. This repression leads to the creation of a dangerous, destructive magical entity known as an "Obscurus." Bottled up magic that brews in negative emotions.

Little controversial take here, I personally prefer Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald. I mean Johnny Depp did a good job but I think he is too 'Tim Burton' of a character for my liking if that makes sense. I'm curious to know which you'll like more!

Mads is an infinitely better Grindelwald, he is exactly what I imagined Grindelwald to be. He feels threatening in a way that Johnny Depp just never did.

    2. Miguel
      1 month

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Mikkelsen gives more off a more threating powerful aura to him while J Depp sort of feels like a cartoony villain but with a twist of madness. It would have been cool if the movie acknowledged the change in a way where he changes in this first movie but who am I to complain?

Ugh I love these movies but Tina Goldstein literally drives me insane. She's SUCH a nosy person and pretty much ALL of newt's problems in this movie are caused by her butting in where she shouldn't even after being suspended for doing exactly that. Great reaction as always and looking forward to the next 2 as well!

How are Newt’s problems her fault? His niffler escaped, he’s the one who left the egg on the bench that got Jacob involved in the first place which caused the case switch which let his creatures out. She saw someone bring a bunch of magical creatures to a city that’s already on the tipping point of finding out about the magical world and he clearly has trouble containing them. Why wouldn’t she report it to the higher ups? Yes she wants to get her job back but she’s still trying to do the responsible thing. She literally just met Newt, she doesn’t owe him anything. She even agreed to help him find the creatures and he just dipped in the middle of the night.  And her “butting in” that got her demoted was her trying to save an abused child. I really think people let the protagonist bias for Newt cloud their judgment of her.

Also, not to mention how poorly Tina was treated by the MACUSA. She got demoted for trying save a child from an abusive mother, they interrupted her when she tried to tell them about Newt and Jacob and then when she did manage to tell them, instead of thanking her, they got upset that she didn't tell them earlier even though she literally tried to tell them earlier in the movie. I'm disappointed that these guys just glossed over her mistreatment, but not surprised.

      2. LikeThat
        30 days

You pretty much hit the nail on the board for me. I will never understand the amount of hate Tina gets in the first movie. Of course I understand being annoyed, but the hate is so overblown in my opinion. They're straight up treating her like she's Dursley levels of awful, when all she did was be a nosy snitch. I feel like they just ignored all of her character development and barely cared about her backstory in this movie. The fact that they hated Tina more than the literal child abuser is concerning. I mean, I know we got to spend more time with Tina than the abusive mother, but still.....

    2. Phishinabowl
      1 month

Worst part too is that she does it not once, but TWICE. The second time causing an even bigger mess. She really is a horrible character and tbh the chemistry between her and Newt, or lack thereof, really ruined her as a character IMO. Queenie is great, Tina most definitely not.

Just one thing to make it more interesting. I'm on the spectrum with ADHD and autism, but I recognize myself in Newt's behaviour. So...  The portrayal of Newt Scamander, as played by Eddie Redmayne, in the Fantastic Beasts series has had a significant impact on autism awareness and understanding. While it is not officially stated that Newt Scamander has autism, the character has been praised for representing neurodiversity and breaking stereotypes.
