It's only apparent in retrospect but I think the overall story across the whole show was planned from the start, it's just unfolding slowly and has many POVs that make it look episodic. Episode 1 and 2 already teased things revealed much later.

In one of my college writing classes they claimed the most important thing for a story is to have the ending before the beginning. That way you can make things flow better rather than making things up as you go and having to retcon story bits.
