So, cool thing about the ending of this series. Taken with the greater Devilman series context as a whole, it's strongly implied the final scene with the two moons is an indication of the state of the world once again being reset by God. As it was after the original series, the original TV anime, and for some of the OVAs in the 90s. God hates Satan so much that he makes it so Satan, as Ryo, falls in love with Akira, is forced by circumstances of survival to kill him,and then God resets the world so it can happen all over again. There's even a side series called Devilman Lady where there's kind of a gender swapped version of this that happens.

With the subtext of being a devilman being the same as being gay or queer (people "suddenly" being different in a way that is scary to "normal" people, to the point that "normal" people want to kill them, even if they're actively not harming people) plus Kuroda literally being gay, I always took Miko's confession of love to Miki being a reveal that she was always attracted to/gay for Miki. (and she didn't really do anything with him outside of going to a rave party) and the guy that tried to rape her which she responded to by immediately killing him.
Comparing being gay to being a devilman is a little iffy and certainly not 1 to 1, but it's a strong subtext and it makes her sacrifice to try and save Miki so much more beautifully resonant.

And so the iconic tragic ending of devilman comes to pass for another new to the series, this time by way of the modern netflix take on the classic series. Devilmans an old classic from the 70s and this ending for akira miki and ryo has been catching new fans off guard for 50ish years now
