   not related if it hasn't been clarified, yoruichi passed on the earrings to tanjiro's ancestor along with the sun breathing style because he saw some kind of purity within them. Tanjiro would be a direct descendant of the guy that looks like him in the flashback, who I think inherits the earrings from yoruichi, yoruichi's brother is the rank 1 demon and an original hashira

   Am I misunderstanding the ranking? I figured it just meant that one got stronger than them not necessarily that a demon was killed for another to take their rank. Or maybe the demons can kill each other and Muzan just meant an upper rank that was killed by a demon slayer?
