Katherine has been invited into Elena's house since the Season 1 finale - so she easily could've entered the house, posed as Elena, etc. etc. did what she needed to do to get to Aunt Jenna

The friends and family that don't know are given vervain that they ingest without knowing. Katherine even tells Elena that she convinced Aunt Jenna to stop using her vervain perfume and stop drinking "her special tea" which is vervain tea. So they give the people around them multiple things with vervain to be sure they always have something with vervain. Katherine is just quick, manipulative, and smart so she went after people in secret to get them off it and make them her spies or weapons.
