I definitely think Pearl had an issue setting relationship boundaries with Rose. Their relationship was most certainly romantic, but I doubt they ever defined themselves as exclusive, given how Pearl calls Greg a "phase" and we see later that Rose was involved with many humans during her thousands of years on earth. Pearl just assumed due to being Rose's first (and strongest) connection that went past Homeworld and the first gem that decided to defect with her that Rose would always love her most and want to spend eternity with her, without ever vocalizing that to her. Rose and Pearl taught each other what love was, but they were never on equal footing. Then Greg comes along, the first human who can even slightly understand Rose. The first human who offered her an escape from eternity into the life she had wanted most for her thousands of years of life, and she couldn't resist. But she and Pearl seemingly never actually TALKED about how their lives were diverging.

I think that they look younger in the flash backs because it was the 80s and they copied their outfits based on what they saw humans wearing. Everyone in the 80s were always dressing like kids basically.

Another thing could be height perception. The combination of Rose being 8ft tall (easily the tallest of the bunch) and Greg looking so similar to Steven, that the Crystal Gems look smaller. In these flashbacks, Greg is an adult in his early 20's and is already 6ft tall, but he looks so similar to steven, that people are making the comparison to Steven's 3'6" height. Even though Amethyst is 4'0 in every instance that we see her, she looks incredibly small in the flashbacks because our frame of reference is Greg instead of Steven.

They do like pearl, but you can like a character while pointing out all the bs they're doing and getting annoyed by it. Even pearl fans (like me) can agree that she has said some super annoying stuff in the earlier seasons, even for things not related to her past/things that happened that were out of her control, she has said some super insensitive things out of nowhere (like in message received or on the run).
Sometimes I feel like they are too hard on her, but most of the criticism is valid and should be expected from a serious critique of the show. They still give credit where it's due, which I really like.
