I doubt anyone will see this a year later, but since you guys liked this so much I think you guys would love A Tale Dark & Grimm. It's on Netflix and it's vibe is like this and Coraline had a baby. Spooky good times. I'd tell you how it's starts off to hook you, but that'd be a spoiler. 😂

This show is such a solid work of art. One thing I always get a bit wistful is during the Beast's song, as he sounds so much like my late grandpa. And all the old-timey like songs in this second half, really reminds me of my childhood growing up with both grandparents. It's such a trip in both nostalgia and yet, still so freshly new. =3

Oh man I loved your guys’ reaction to this show, it’s such an amazing and solid cartoon! Infinity Train is another mini-series released by Cartoon Network which I think y’all might enjoy. Every season (seasons are referred to as “books”) is ten episodes long, 11 minutes each, just like Over the Garden Wall. It’s an anthology series, so each season has its own storyline and characters, but they’re all loosely connected

The main theory is that the show takes place in a purgatory-like place

Love the reaction, one of my favorite short stories. Regarding where the place the characters were in, my theory is that the boys were in some kind of purgatory.
PS. as a dinosaur fanatic I wanna say this. Dinosaurs had ears however they did not have something like an Auricular or Pinna. One big reason why paleontologists think that is because there are no reptiles or birds alive today that have such ears, just earholes. Also since ears are made of cartilage and skin in pretty much all animals today, it is hard to figure out what the ears looked like on any fossilized animal. So far we can only speculate from what their current relatives look like, to get some idea of how their ears looked.

Just wanted to add that when I used the word "fanatic" i meant it as someone who has a very high interest around Dinosaurs. Hope it didnt sound too weird when I used it in that way (I also cant edit my previous comment which is why im making this reply).

So it's never revealed what the unknown is, but the most popular theory is sort of that it's either like the edge of death or the other side or something. So potentially, maybe the huntsman was in a coma or all the characters you meet in the unknown are dead or perhaps they were all on the edge of death. But if you look at the characters, they all seem to be from different times but yeah, it's up to interpretation for sure.

so this was supposed to be an 18 episoder originally but because of budget stuff it had to be trimmed down. one of the darker stories that was cut was the boys meet a man named mr.whittles who would kidnap children and use their teeth and bones to make dice

There are some great videos on Over the Garden Wall such as the Trey the Explainer videos on this series, such as his comparison to Dantes Inferno.
Also Cartoon Network did release the tape that Wirt made for Sara in YouTube so you can also listen to what was on the tape.

I love how Wirt is just like “Why the hell would I wander around in the woods just to keep his soul in a lantern that’s fucking dumb” the beast didn’t have a back up to Wirts having common sense

two coins is what it costs to pay charon the ferryman on the river styx.
"putting out to pasture" is a phrase used to describe someone retired.
The death imagery has been dropped throughout the show. Pretty cool.

A little bit of context it technically was in Wirts head, but technically not the unknown is pretty much just purgatory. They were damn near close to dying everyone they met on the other side were souls that had passed on and who reside there in one way or another this is actually kind of like a reimagining of Dantes inferno also, they climbed over the cemetery wall in the cemetery was called the eternal garden.

The Unknown is the place between life and death, between dreams and reality.

Based on the name on the grave in the cemetery scene, it's a theory that the entire world they were in was kinda like the "other side". They had a near death experience when they fell into the water, and the beast was death chasing them. But they beat the beast, made it out of the woods, and were able to be saved in the end.

I recommend watching some theory videos on this. They're done by people who are wildly dedicated to finding all the little bits and pieces that explain the story and world. Then watch it again sometime later. It's a different experience once you have an idea of what's happening but no matter what the vibe this show gives off is fantastic.

The most common theory was that the woods were purgatory, because Wirt and Greg were between life and death as they were drowning in the water. If they gave in to the Beast, they would give in to death, but since they didn't lose hope, they made it out of purgatory and returned to life.
