Watch the live action version and form your own opinion. I personally liked both versions, they aren't 1:1 the same and that was a good thing to me. The animated one is funnier but the live action felt more grown up and I liked the actions scenes. You guys may like it or hate it but I think it is still worth a try.
My Nana was a lot like Mulan's grandma lol, she never held anything back. When my now-husband and I started dating as teens she would badger my dad into letting him come to family functions.
I think the only reason I remember so many Disney movies as well as I do is because I had to constantly rewatch them with my younger siblings who are 5 1/2 and 11 years younger than me. If the age gap had been smaller my memories would more than likely be a lot fuzzier with the movies, but I'm like Boom and I watched a LOT of the shows more often. Gummie Bears rule!

That smash cut to the destroyed village is so good. Fun fact, that's the last song in the movie. Once that realization hits the movie stops being a musical for the rest of the runtime.

Mulan is not as dark as Tarzan and Hunchback of Notre Dame, which are two recommended Disney movies to watch. They're really good and dark as hell!

My favorite live-action remakes are 101 Dalmations and Cinderella. Other than those I'm not really into the Disney remakes, I don't usually like live-action remakes of animated movies at all actually.

If I remember correctly, Disney got in some hot water after the live action Mulan because one of their "thanks/mentions" was to what is basically a concentration camp for allowing them to film nearby and keeping the prisoner noise to a minimum.
Hands down. The greatest Disney villain. Your opinion doesn't matter. Not only was he almost successful. But he is the ONLY Disney villain who genuinely respected his underlings. And that moment where Mulan reveals herself as the soldier to him... He didn't stop and say, "But you're a woman!" Nah! He just eagle eyed her and went for her throat. Technically showing her more respect as his enemy than anyone else in the movie, including her own parents, did prior to that moment. Epic villain. And his motives are the exact same as Ursula from Little Mermaid... "You wanna form a little society and leave me in the cold? Fine... I'll make you regret that choice."
Also, Ruff was right, there are 3 live action Disney Jungle Books. They left out Mowgli's Story.

The only pizza buffet I've ever been to is CiCi's, and instead of taking the pan of pizza they have at the counter, you can just order a whole pizza to be brought to your table and it doesn't cost anything extra, it's just part of the buffet

I've always loved that the first thing Mulan does after making her decision to take her father's place is go to the temple and pray to the ancestors. It shows that she wasn't being rash or impulsive - she knew what the consequences would be, and it makes everything that happens after much more powerful. She knows that she might lose her life, but if she does nothing her father will definitely lose his. Such a smart move to put that tiny moment of her acknowledging that what she was doing was "wrong" but loving her family enough to do it anyway.
Matchless Mulan from China is the good Mulan live action its included in Prime :)

Most likely correct. The Mongols were one of the only societies that allowed women to fight in their wars. To Shan Yu, Mulan was just a soldier that threatened his own strength.

Random fun fact: I’ve been rewatching How I Met Your Mother recently and since I know some of you guys rewatch that show too, maybe you’d find it fun to know; the guy who plays Yao (the guy who flashes Mulan here) also played Lily’s smoking voice in Last Cigarette Ever. I’m surprised by the amount of VAs in that show honestly, like there are two random cameos from the VA for Captain Gantu in Lilo and Stitch, and the voice for Homer Simpson near the end of Season 4.

Not a popular opinion, but I think you guys should watch the live action. It's a good movie if you don't think of it as a remake and more of an homage to the older kung fu movies. I would like to see an impartial reaction. This also came out during quarantine and I think everyone was upset b/c we didn't have enough to watch and we were all expecting something else. I always suggest to try watching it again, not thinking of it as a remake and most people I've seen who have have liked it.

Never understood why she's considered a Disney princess when she's not a princess at any point
The business reason: her movie was successful therefore she's marketable lol.
Other reasons: she defeated an entire army, saved her nation, gained the respect of the Emperor with him bowing to her, and in the sequel she marries Shang who is the sun of a general. In other words, she does enough to get herself in the line up. The same is said for Pocahontas who's a Chief's daughter (from what I understand that is not the same as a princess), or Elsa who's technically a queen 🤔.

OMG, now ya'll need to watch the animated Tarzan. A fuckin banger of a classic, the Phil Collins soundtrack is worth it on it's own. Also, Brendan Fraser was in George of the Jungle, a much sillier kinda spoof of Tarzan.
A really good Mulan live action is the 2009 version Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, the son of Jackie Chan is in it and it's closer to the actual legend of Mulan. I really recommended it!!!!!!

They also were so opposed to her having any flaws they added a sister to mess up the matchmaker scene so it wasn't her fault. A "normal" sister with no special powers who had no value except to find a man who wasn't a war hero to marry. Nice messaging there.

Do NOT watch the live action movie. It's not the same and it's not worth it. Watch Xiran Jay Zhao's YouTube video about it and you'll understand why it's not worth the watch. If you want to watch a good live action Chinese film, watch Ip Man instead. Ip Man and every sequel to it are fantastic. The best martial arts franchise ever made by far if you ask me. And it's not just excellent because of action. It's excellent because of the writing and the acting. It's the only martial arts film that has made me cry. And it makes me cry nearly every time I watch it. It's based on the life of a real person. You would love it.
it was actually my final straw with Disney. After Star Wars, i was just apathetic. The live action movie made me absolutely despise them. They shit canned an actual strong female character story for theyre idiotic "youve always been special and powerful" cardboard cut out of a "character" that happened to have a vagina. their standard for female characters the last decade or so. absolutely insulting to the the story and characters and then everything on top of that. this was one of the three cornerstone movies of my childhood along with Hercules and Lilo & Stitch. Anyway... i whole heartedly agree about Ip Man. fantastic movies
Also, I think it’s visually implied that the great stone dragon had already been awakened in Mulan, as it keeps cutting to dragons during the montage of her preparing to leave. That explains why Mushu couldn’t wake it up.

In the original Ballad of Mulan she returns home and reveals she is a woman to her comrades who compare her eyes to that of a man's declaring there is no difference. I. The Novel after the emperor discovers she is a woman he demands she become his concubine and Mulan commits suicide over her father's grave in defiance.
