The story in Moana is actually kind of a really cool potential mythological explanation of real world history. In real life, the Polynesians were voyaging and exploring the ocean thousands of years before Europeans developed the technology to do so. Then, in around 900 BC, they suddenly stopped. And then, 1000 years later, they started again. It's called the Long Pause, and it's not really clear why they stopped voyaging, or why they started again.

I had a thought what if when Maui originally lost the heart after his first fight with Te Ka the ocean ended up using the heart for itself, for a few centuries into is only when it realized that islands were dying and started to look for a chosen person. because we see that the ocean is actually able to pick up and give the heart to them after Maui throws it so it’s always the question of why couldn’t the ocean have returned the heart to Ta Fiti. Like, maybe Moana is actually just the first person to succeed, but wasn’t the first person chosen by the ocean. I mean the heart was stolen at 1000 years ago. Are you telling me that Moana was the first one to try? So my thought like I said, what if the ocean used the power of the heart for a few centuries let’s say five or six bringing life to all sea creatures. But with people not leaving their islands, fish slowly dying out, monsters rising for their realm.

I remember I didn’t wanna watch this movie bc The trailer made it seem OK or like it’s going to be a Alright movie and I’m glad my mom forced me to watch lol.  The part that hit me the most, is when Moana is at her lowest point and she sing “ I am Moana”, it hit my fucking soul. That part was so beautiful and I was at my lowest point at that time because I didn’t know who I was back 2016.

In the song your welcome, everything Maui says is true; he did pull islands from the sea, he stole fire from I think his grandma to give to humans, he hooked the sun <- story to that: basically the sun was lazy and raced across the sky so he could sleep, Maui got pissed so he waited for the sun and when the sun came out he hooked it with his fishhook, and said I'll keep you here as long as I have to, until the sun agreed to stop being lazy. He also did in fact bury an eel's guts and from it grew coconuts and not we have coconuts. Take all this with a grain of salt I might be misremembering a lot

I remember when this movie came out. I had just started college, and my mom asked me to bring my younger siblings (they were 8 and 5 at the time) to the movie theater to watch it. I ended up enjoying myself way more than they did. It's such a good movie. I spent months after watching it listening to the soundtrack, watching behind the scenes, that sort of stuff.

In high school, I was in an ASL class that would work with the choir class for their performances. Basically, the entirety of the ASL class would be behind the choir kids during their performances signing the songs in ASL. For one year, we did a Disney based show, and the section my class was signing was the Moana section! I unfortunately forgotten how to sign these songs, but it was pretty cool to perform.

My favorite song from Moana is Shiny, idk why but I love it so much, so I was sad that song wasn't part of my school's show for the Disney thing :((

One of the many things I love about this movie is that there's no shoe-horned romance subplot.

There's an affection that develops between Maui and Moana but it is friendship.

The chieftain is Temuera Morrison, aka Boba Fett (and other stuff). Woo!

The grandmother, Rachel House, is hilarious in Our Flag Means Death.

To answer the question this was inspired by Polynesian mythology. Maui is an actual demigod in Polynesian mythology.

To chim in it changes depending on which poly cultures you look at for Maori culture he is only associated with fishing up the islands, slowing the sun, and bringing fire to mankind. So for the holding up the sky, planting the eel to get coconuts i would say that would be other polynesian myth. But i'm sure others will be able to advise on which myth belongs where.

It's not the grandma....if you look at the stones ( 14 or so) so that is 14 chiefs on that island.  They would be from well before the Grandma's time....but perhaps a relative.

Since Erik asked about it: unlike with many other stories like this, the ocean gave Moana an actual choice instead of forcing the savior role on her. It thought Moana was a great fit for the job after seeing her caring nature as a child, but if the mission was too much for her to take and Moana didn't want to continue anymore she was allowed to make that decision for herself instead of the usual "fuck you, you're the hero. Your feelings don't matter. You have to do it."

Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the music to this movie, you can't deny he's talented. I also second the comment section about Hamilton and ESPECIALLY The Book Of Life. You guys dismissed it (playfully!) awhile ago about it being a Coco knockoff but it's not. It's SO good.

Goddamnit Ruff, first it's the fleshlight, now furry cosplay, he can't keep dying in progressively more ludicrous ways.

i couldn't hear what Eric said when he asked who was singing at 26:35, but that's Lynn Manuel Meranda. he is the one who wrote and directed all of the songs in this movie, and he's also the creator of the Broadway show Hamilton, as well as playing the first role of Hamilton. (which is also on Disney+ with the original cast! highly recommend a watch)
