I'm not a big Batman fan but when I think of Batman movies this one is always the image in my head because I've seen it quite a lot as a kid. Looking back this is quite dark for young kids lol but for older kids and up I think it's a fine comic book movie.

Batman killing is cool, as an alternate elseworld version, its the novelty of "Oh shit batmans killing!" but it being the norm would be boring af, the no kill rule is one of the interesting psychological and ethical parts of his character. bit of a tweak on a writers quote, but if you have batman killing or you cant imagine him comforting someone, you dont have batman, you have the punisher

This goes back to some of the first comics of Batman where he had no qualm in killing.

Well, bear with me for a second: what if he almost never kills... but has to when needed (and yeah, I know this is a thing in the comics, sometimes). My point is, it would be interesting to have a Batman that will be pushed to the limits and will kill only when absolutely necessary.

If that were the case, then almost most of his rogues wouldn't exist and he'd have no villains. You would never see joker in another story again.

I think the fact that he won’t kill when necessary is what makes him flawed and interesting.

He can't do that because it defeats the point and reasoning why he doesn't kill in the first place. He doesn't do it because he knows he won't be able to stop killing once he starts and he doesn't want to go down that road

This movie was super controversial at the time for being so dark and morbid but being advertised "for kids." Marketing wasn't happy about that, a lot of advertisers signed on just because the first one was such a huge success without ever seeing a cut of the film, most famously McDonalds. If you go back and look at the toys that came out at the time they were seriously toned down - the Penguin action figure for the movie is the classic cartoony 'fat mobster in a suit' and looks nothing like this version. Tim Burton has said he had to make some serious cuts to avoid an R rating. They did kind of ask him back for a third movie and he had ideas, he wanted Robin Williams as the Riddler (we were robbed) and Marlon Wayans as Robin, but Burton said he could tell they were kind of just being polite and sent signals they didn't really want him to do it so he moved on.

Its funny in a way, because when this came out even though it was the 90s, the kids of the era had still been bottle-raised on 80's fare. We weren't strangers to dark things in our stories by any means.

Watching this for the first time in years I couldn't help but think of 3 things:1. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman still has the worst version of her backstory... and I still don't care because DAMN. 😍
2. I will forever think about the Danny Devito vampire replacement meme.

2:06:12 I haven't really watched many superhero movies but I feel like Live Action movies are just overall more likely to kill the bad guys. Superhero movies are usually from what I see, just a one and done villain deal (pretty sure just from DCAMU movies, you had several like that).
It makes sense - movies have to be different and the "easiest" way to do it, is to just get a new villain. For a cartoon show or a comic that's long running, it'd be a waste of characters if all of them were just one offs when you have like ~40 episodes to fill.
Not saying you can't enjoy that kind of stories though (it's a nice change of pace)
