Yeah there were supposed to be 2 killers, but I'm pretty sure the script got leaked so they had to change up the killers. Next 3 are also super fun. you get to see the evolution of how much more gory and graphic movies are allowed to be while still being rated R after 11 years pass.
I think Angelina aka Fake Sidney being Roman’s accomplice was actually going to be a plot point but it got removed in the Final Cut for some reason.
I definitely don’t hate this one or anything but for me this will always be ranked last of the series just because it has so little of what makes a Scream movie good (in my opinion).
-There’s no variety in the kills, almost everyone dies by stabs to the back or chest and we don’t even get to see it half the time (thank you unnecessary media censorship after Columbine)
-For a movie series ABOUT movies, we don’t even do anything that cool with the Hollywood setting, with the exception of Sidney’s chase on the movie set.
-Besides Jennifer, none of the new characters get anything to do or even any screen time to leave an impression
-The Ghostface voice changer doesn’t make ANY sense for the year 2000 and it just robs us of Roger L. Jackson’s vocal performance, AKA one of the best voices in horror
-The satire is basically nonexistent, if anything this movie embraces the tropes that the last two subverted (like Cotton’s girlfriend being in the shower for no reason when they made fun of that in Scream 2)
-Roman is such an underwhelming killer. Not only does him faking his death not make any sense but he doesn’t even interact with Sidney before the reveal so the whole brother reveal doesn’t have any weight to it/just feels out of a soap opera. And, no offense to Scott Foley but I find that him as the killer is REALLY missing that campy fun energy all the previous killers brought post-reveal.
-Sidney barely even feels like the main character in this one. The real world reason is because Neve Campbell was only available for 20 days of shooting but having her so minimized I think really does a disservice to the story they’re trying to tell about her isolating from the world and coping with her mother's past.
All that said I do honestly still like this movie, it’s a perfectly fine 6/10 for me, it’s just the one Scream movie that doesn’t quite live up to the standards the rest of the franchise set.
You guys constantly ragging on Gale's hair was so freaking funny!! Because for the longest time I didn't like the movie because of this reason, lol. Courtney Cox also hated it. I would never usually say this, but whose ever idea that was needed to be fired. Courtney is a beautiful woman, but that did not do her any favors. Luckily she was able to fix it, so she didn't have it on Friends. Monica would never have that hair style, lol. However, I have overlooked it and now I think it's a blast. It's definitely not as good as the others but I think it's just so much fun. And I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I like it more then 4. Yes, I get that one has a pretty big fanbase, I definitely get why and it is technically better then this one, but I think it's overrated. I just think this one is a lot more fun, I like the characters and honestly I think Jennifer is one of the most underrated characters of the whole franchise, she starts out really annoying but the more she becomes involved she gets better and better and I think her death is one of the saddest. I also like the theme of this one, I would watch this one any day over 4, that's just me though.
I like Roman as the killer, I like his backstory and his tie in to the first. I thought it was really smart how he used Billy. If anyone was wondering how Billy even found out about the affair, well they answered it and honestly Billy watching his father having the affair probably caused him to go insane. And I think it also answers that Billy really was trying to kill Stu, just not in the obvious way like Nancy did to Mickey. And speaking of Mickey, I wanted to mention this in the Scream 2 reaction but didn't want to give anything away for this one, but it was solely because of Mickey and the mindgames he played on Sydney that caused her to go into isolation in this, he really did do some psychological damage to her. Wes Craven spoke about it on the Scream 2 DVD commentary. And that's another reason why he's one of my favorites. And yes, having Sydney wear the necklace Derek gave her was such a good touch.
It's funny too that they complain about the constant re-writes because that happened in the Scream 2 and 3 production, the scripts were getting leaked, Scream 2 had completely different killers in the original script, the only thing that was the same was Nancy I believe. And they also had to change a lot of this one because of the columbine shooting, which happened not to long earlier. Even though I like that there is only one killer in this because it does make it different and stand out from the others, it honestly doesn't make any sense though. Clearly there were supposed to be 2 killers, so many times there is no way that was just one person. And originally it was supposed to be Angelina, but of course they had to change it due to script leaks.
If I remember right, the Jay and Silent Bob cameo was a returned favor to Wes Craven for his cameo in the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back movie.

Sorry to add another comment forgot to add this to my first. But the thing with Scream is it's mainly used to be meta commentary on horror and its tropes or the landscape at the time. That's why 4 came in after 11 years cause the horror scene changed so much in that time, so they made another one to comment on it, and it's honestly 1 of my favorites ever made.(Also aw sad Christian wasn't in this one. I really like him in these.)
I honestly don't know if I can call Scream horror anymore also, and more just action thriller or somethin, even the first few. I just never got scared by them.

I gotta admit I used to be kinda meh on this movie, but rewatches have really brought me around on it. It may be last on my personal ranking, but it's like I say, there is no such thing as a bad Scream movie. (Although the voice copier is really silly and the Ghostface pick is kinda, weak. But still fun!)
