Hey team, just a couple of comments.Longtime RHPS fan here since my college used to run it as the midnight show every weekend in September and October leading up to Halloween in my college town in 1989 on up. I know that this reaction was a while ago, but the pink triangle comment by Shawn triggered the comment for Posterity sake. When I moved to Manhattan just before Covid I got involved with LGBTQ charity work to kind of meet everyone and get to know the massive queer community here from the POV of someone volunteering to help. I am now a Fully Professed member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an organization which dresses as drag nuns and white facepaint while we're out doing our charity work in the queer community. I'm part of the NYC Disorder chapter hourse, and my name is Sister Faguetta Bouddit.
Since RHPS rose to tremendous popularity in the old theaters on East 50th Street, and Sal Piro was the friend of Dorothy who organized and led the passion for keeping the East Street theater running floor shows and live weekend performances for many years, anchoring the US influence on the Eastern Seaboard for this wonderfully subversive phenomenon. And yes, the Germans in WWII used colored patches and simple shapes to denote which minority the prisoners in the concentration camps belonged to. Jews were not the only victims of the Nazi genocides of WWII. Gays were denoted by the Pink Triangle, which called out for extra harsh treatment among all of the prisoners. When the Allies liberated the Concentration Camps, everyone else was set free, but not the gays. Queers remained imprisoned under the Allied nations as well, just in more humane accommodations. Most Allied nations had laws making homosexuality illegal, so the queers in the Concentration Camps who got lucky enough to be liberated got to die in the prisons of their liberators.
This is why the queer pride movement adopted the pink triangle. Anthropologists still remark that the Gay Pride movement coming out of WWII was the only social movement to successfully and directly purge the stain of Nazi evil from the very symbol they used to oppress the queers. No one else has successfully erased the Nazi evil from their symbols of shame to turn them into symbols of hope and commitment to a lofty ideal hard won over many generations. Thank you, Shawn, for pointing out that part of history to folks.
For the movie itself, just a note from back in the day hardcore fan -- re: what'esd missing from the xperience in modern day of the RHPS.
The audience participation track was key, and since the DVD first came out, it has slowly faded from the xperiernce becausde no one se4esw it live whrer4 efveryone knows the participation track of clever things to shoult oiut toimake them say or act in humorous wasys during the slower bits. No one got to 'see' the movie in the theaters because the whole show is a three ring circus between the film itself, the floor show, and the audience participation where folks try coming up with newer more clever ways to make jokes along with the film.
It's oral history which is fading from living memory. RHPS was a Boomer phernomenon which had already faded from the headlines of cultrure by the time my Gen X ass discovered it in college. Different regions had different customs, but you just had to go to see a show enough to learn what to shout at the screen and when. It might be cool to do a Sorta Stupid event where we react to RHPS but you get in some remote guests (happy to volunteer to play along] who know the audience participation track and who are willing to use all the props that make RHPS truly a representation of the way you would have encountered it back in the 70s,. 80s,. and 90s.
I'm sure we could scare up some folks for the event, and I know that Riff Raff, Magenta, and Columbia still do occasional podcast guest appearances to talk about and hype the show. Could be a good Halloween 2025 thing.

Someone else already suggested Phantom of the Paradise, but if you wanna keep doing cult-y horror musicals, you could also check out Repo! The Genetic Opera (one of my all-time favorite movies), and The Devil's Carnival (there's a sequel to this one too).

To those who have not seen glee, that touch-a-touch-a-touch me scene is not even in the top 30 most unhinged shit that show had done. How the hell it ran for so many years is a miracle in itself. Just to throw out a random example, the main character was jealous that a new student was a better singer than her so when the new student wanted to try out for the glee club the main character sent her to a “non active” crack house. Or another time(my favorite episode) when it was a Britney Spears episode multiple characters went to the dentist to get high on laughing gas because they were able to channel the spirit of Britney Spears while sleeping. MIND YOU Britney Spears herself made appearances during those dream sequences.
I thought I could contain myself by watching this but I immediately got sucked into performing alongside the movie???

Also please do rections to Legend (1985 movie) and Fern gully, the last rainforest(animated movie)! Tim Curry plays the villian in both! Ripley Scott directed Legend and was one of Tom Cruise first movies. Fern Gully was Robin Williams first Animated movie voice over as Batty Koda seven months later Aladdin came out so people forget that Batty was first!

It was a stage play first. Meatloaf was the only person besides Riffraff (he's actually the creator of this)) that was in the original stage play.
