I haven't seen this film since it came out and I rented it. Rewatching does bring back memories and I remember how much they hyped this up on nickelodeon constantly. With that said I remember finding this film dull as a kid, but now I can appreciate what it's going for especially after seeing half of Napoleon Dynamite and the type of comedy that was 🤔.

Napoleon Dynamite is actually funny though, this movie tries to recapture that, but really fails to.

So to explain more of what was going on, i think the point on why he still lost at the qalifiers, was ,ore that he was trying to still use the excuse for heloing the kids rather than the fact he was still trying to gain glory. Remember what the nun said only when you truly have a reason to fight, will god help you. At the very end when the sister and the kids were there and he was finally striped of the mask and was just him he realized that their honor and respect was what mattered most and its also why his 'eagle powers" finally activated.

I practically grew up with this movie, my family and I love it and we all still quote it on a daily basis, all these years I never even peeped that the kid was the brother from Fallout. Damn I feel old

Jared Hess films always have a quirky, awkward, slightly off-kilter vibe. He really leans into the silence following a line delivery.

Other films with this vibe (Some directed by Jared Hess, some not):

    Napoleon Dynamite

    Gentlemen Broncos

    Don Verdean

    The Sasquatch Gang

    Hot Rod

Kevin James did a movie a few years ago called "Here Comes the Boom" that had a very similar plot setup to this but the movie itself was way better in my opinion. It is also a bit more serious overall too. It's a good watch that I would recommend for the whole group.

Fun fact, this movie is loosely based on a true story. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez was a a priest who also wrestled as a luchador starting in the 70s and wrestled under the name Fray Tormenta. He wrestled to support the orphanage that he founded and officially retired from wrestling in 2011 (although he was mostly retired by that point already.) He actually makes an appearance in this movie as a retired luchador. Another interesting fact, he was an alcoholic and a drug addict before becoming a priest at 22. He is still alive at 80 years old, and still works at the orphanage, and one of the kids that he raised at the orphanage has taken up the mantle as Fray Tormenta Jr. He also stars in a comic book called Místico: El Principe de Plata y Oro as the mentor for the character Místico, while also inspiring several characters (including Greco from Chrono Cross)
