You two did a bang-up job of reacting to this -- especially for those who've never seen it before. I regret to age myself but I saw this back in 1977. It was loud and crazy back then. No one knew what the heck was what. I love Alexis' reactions to the creatures (so cute, I love them! I just want one!) and your reaction to the Mouse droid and Chewbacca screaming at it was exactly as it happened with the audience. The film version you watched is a combination of the original and dozens of clean-ups, changes (Jabba did not appear since Lucas didn't have the tech to put him in the scene -- notice how Greedo and Han say basically the same lines as Jabba does when he confronts Han?) And yes .. those skeletons burning on the homestead were pretty traumatic for a PG film.

Jumping into a rabid fandom can be scary and tough. Most people are fairly chill, don't let the few crazies online spoil your image of the casual fans. Glad ya'll gave it a chance, at the very least there is a lot of fun over the top shows and movies in Star Wars.

If Leia had not lured the Death Star to the Rebels Base, the Empire may have realized the weakness of the Death Star. If the Rebels engaged the Death Star at another location, either they send in a large fleet to cover the fighters, which they are prepared for; or they send the fighters in, unsupported. Then the Empire wonders why the hell 2 dozen star fighters are attacking this moonsized battle station? The Death Star can at that point call for reinforcements, or simply leave. Instead Leia dangles the prize of the Rebel Base infront of Tarkins nose and he concludes that the fighters are a last desperate act instead of a genuine threat.

fun fact if you think a background scene is painted it probably is, since the CGI originally wasn't that advanced they painted A TON of the backgrounds

If you guys want the deep cut lore on "Han shot first" There's actually several versions of the original trilogy with different iterations and levels of CGI added in, since some stuff just wasn't possible when the films were first recorded. One of the things they changed was, in the theatrical release, Han definitely shot first, and then slightly edited to make Greedo shoot first and Han slightly "dodges" the shot, because apparently people felt like it made Han less relatable if he was willing to shoot first. But "true fans" know that Han shot first. that's why "Han shot first" is like "i know whats up"

Re:"I talked about my space issue" which I believe is Astrophobia? You did mention it in Fifth Element, specifically during the Diva Plavalaguna scene with the planetary backdrop.

The lightsabers in episode 4 were practical, but also fragile because they had an internal lightning system. Episodes 1-3 and 5-6 used metal rods for the sabers. Episodes 7-9 used an internal lightning system again, but the materials were sturdier than episode 4.

I've always low-key hated the whole "Prequels" being Episode 1-3 and the original actual movies then having to labeled Episode 4-6. I get it from a chronological perspective but hate the insistence of the numbering system instead of just letting them be their own trilogies. It's also more jarring going from movies done in the late 90s/early 00s to the 70s era film work.

yeah i hear you counting from 1 to 6 is really difficult. It confuses and frustrates me too. Sometimes my teacher won't even let me have a juice box unless I demonstrate the ability to count to 10.

The whole Hand shot first thing is related to changes made to the original 1977 version of the movie. In the original Greedo never even fires his blaster. George Lucas added the shot in the 1997 special edition (which is the version you watched) along with a ton of other stuff. Basically it's calling out changes that a portion of the fan base felt was unnecessary.

Not just unnecessary they felt it damaged the character development. The original one showed how different Han was to Luke. Fresh farm boy dreaming of adventure vs jaded smuggler who'll gun someone down in cold blood. At least from what I recall of the discussion at the time.
