Fun fact, the guy who wrote the book Jaws is based on spent the rest of his life advocating for sharks to be protected. Now you are correct as well in that Australia uses nets to keep sharks out. Except, they don't because they only go down to about 20 feet into the sea and are actually much more harmful because turtles and dolphins and all other kinds of marine life get snagged in them, which actually makes them rather attractive to sharks. So while those nets are security theater, it can be argued they make shark attacks more likely.
If you want to avoid sharks as best as possible, never go swimming during a storm (well that'll save you from more than just sharks, tbf), never swim after a storm because the shallows will be all disturbed and murky, making a shark more likely to misidentify a human as prey, never go into water if you see fish throwing themselves into the air because they're trying to escape. Staying in groups can also help, but excessive splashing can make a shark think something is in distress and that will attract curious sharks because they'll associate it with distress. And while a bite can be very bad, more often than not it is the shark checking to see if it's something it can eat.
I 100% understand what people are saying with them talking a lot during it, but you have to think here. They are a reaction channel. Certain studios, I have heard are real sticklers when it comes to getting YouTube to hand out copyright strikes. Them talking a good amount is probably helping their editor(s) when it comes to what goes up on YouTube.
It's really the same thing for all reaction channels. I still love them of course because it is interesting to see what people think of media you enjoy.
There's a really good episode of Dan Carlin's podcast "Hardcore History" on the USS Indianpolis incident. The quotes from survivors are chilling. The monolgue in this film is a wonderful tribute.
I'm not asking you guys to be super serious in these kinds of movies but damn, you trying to make a joke every 2 seconds doesn't help the mood.
Tell me about it 🙄 they always ruin the moment like damn come on guys, just watch the movie and less talking!
I dont necessarily think there should be less talking, but more genre friendly banter. For example, this movie is played to be pretty serious. Does it have comedic beats? Of course, but its by no means a comedy. More like an action horror flick. So i feel their commentary should be more inline with what the movie is, like the comment Boom made about the dolly zoom being one of his favorite shots ever. Stuff about how fantastic this movie holds up even though its 50 years old or how interesting the characters themselves are. The constant jab at making jokes makes it seem like they dont appreciate what theyre watching. I think part of it is the girl, i forget her name, but she doesnt do this. Ruff and the gang have built their careers around reactions, she hasnt, so to me it seems like this is what feels natural to her for reactions sakes. Shes probably not interested in this 50 year old movie, but shes gotta make comments somewhere, so she defaults to comedy. Id like to see them put her in reaction videos where shes genuinely into whatever theyre watching, and not just doing it because they need a seat filled. Thats just my opinion though.
I agree with that.
It always amazes me this films Rated 12! It's pretty gruesome!
Since Jaws was a Moby Dick analogue Brody was the only one that lived in the book. That changed , in part due to "filmmakers Ron and Valerie Taylor. Ron had been a cameraman on the acclaimed 1971 shark documentary Blue Water, White Death. Knowing that the Hooper in the cage scene would be a part of the film, the producers hired the Taylors to shot some footage of real sharks interacting with a diver in a cage. As 25-foot sharks are not easily found, to make the local sharks appear larger, the Taylors decided to use a smaller cage, which could hold a much smaller diver. Enter 4’9” Carl Rizzo, who jumped at the offer of a free trip to Australia. Rizzo stood a full 8” shorter then the eventually cast Richard Dreyfuss, and his smaller stature made even the normal sized sharks loom larger.
Lowered into the water in a cage that was 5/8th the size of the cage used in the film. As the cameras rolled, curious great white sharks would swim by, curious as to what was floating just below the surface. One shark got too curious and attacked the cage. Rizzo narrowly escaped by the amazing footage of the shark thrashing about and trashing the cage was too good not to use. But in order to use the footage of a shark destroying an empty cage, the filmmakers had to show Hooper getting away and hiding. "
There are only 4 Jaws films by the way
I was REALLY hoping Ruff would have been in this reaction. Bummer he couldn't join.
I recall that the characters in the book were awful to the point people tended to root for the shark... But the movie made them more likeable. XD I also used to watch this movie a whole lot during summer break with my cousin, while living right next to the ocean, to quickly turn to her to jokingly ask if she wanted to go shipping. She hated me for that. XD As for poking Jaws in the eyes... wouldn't have helped, as sharks tend to have poor eyesight to begin with.
Canonfire has cute ears.
.that is all
I like to think the shooting star was ET’s ship
No, Bruce from Finding Nemo isn’t Bruce from this. It’s his son. To quote Bruce from Finding Nemo, “I never knew my father!” Because he died in this movie.
The Mayor is the real villain in this movie. The shark is just an animal being an animal but the mayor is a capitalist prick. He reminds me of Mr Krabs
"Capitalist prick..." You forget what Quint said in his introduction, "You want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter." Money, regardless of the economic system you have is what makes the world go round, especially in a small town like this. His words arent just supposed to be scary warnings to get a bigger pay out, he is serious. Without the tourists this town goes belly up. The decision to either send the people you govern into poverty or to cross your fingers and hope this shark attack is a one time thing is not easy by any means. Did he make a bad roll of the dice? Yes, but to call him a capitalist prick because he makes a bad decision FOR the people and town he governs is easy to say in hindsight/from the sidelines. Capitalism is what allows this company "Sorta Stupid" to exist, your anger towards an economic system that has been here since before your birth will not help you succeed, it will only weigh you down mentally.
But his blazers are one of the best parts of the film, especially the anchor one
This movie is Dolphin propaganda
There are many behind the scenes stories for this film, lots of them problems. Most prominently, the mechanical shark ended up putting them 75 days behind schedule. By all logical reasoning, this movie should have destroyed Spielberg's career. Instead it became one of his iconic films and the first blockbuster movie and my all time favorite movie.
It actually worked in Spielberg's favor as the shark was supposed to be seen earlier in the movie. Especially when the Kintner boy got it. However the dummy they used for it didn't look good. The end result is that you don't fully see the shark until the third act. It worked so well that is the standard for some monster movies.
First Jaws is great, 2nd one wasn't bad, everything after was crap
Fun fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro (Mrs. Kintner) walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed an "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother many years ago. Jeffrey Voorhees, the manager of the restaurant who had played Alex, ran out to meet her. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.
Can't believe this is 50 years old and still looks good.
