    Sadness =/= depression.

    This movie depicts depression with Riley experiencing no joy, experiencing no sadness, and having no personality.  When you are depressed you aren't happy, you aren't sad, and you aren't YOU.  People who suffer with depression generally struggle to feel any emotion at all, and they tend to shut down completely.

    Really like this movie, it really delves into the complexity of emotions and their places. I’d love a whole series about it showing different people in different walks of like and different stages of life. There is actually a series that does just that on Netflix called Big Mouth, it’s more of an external manifestation of complex emotions where the characters actually convers with the emotions/hormones that still have sway on their person instead of internally, like how Riley’s emotions have a console in her head. But it does deal with anxiety, depression, sham and first and foremost how hormones influence developing young people. I always consider it the r rated version of inside out. You guys should check it out even if it’s just the best of Maury and best of Connie highlights.

    I remember a theory that whoever is the one in charge is the primary. So Riley used to always be happy, Dad struggles with his anger, and Mom struggles with depression.

    I remember there was a theory of riley being adpoted and how she doesnt look like the parents. also they said that because of that the moms main emotion is sadness because of a miscrage or not being able to have kids. They compared her mom to be like the lady from up. and how at the beginning it doesnt look like the mom didnt give birth and all that.

    i remember bawling my eyes out watching this the first time, and even the second and third time too! It's such a creative concept for an animation :) Would love to see you guys react to the second one too - the animation quality is even better!

    In this one it does feel like the emotions are controlling Riley like a video game but in the second one they do a much better job with it.

    I saw Inside Out 2 in Theaters, twice, and I know you guys were taking at the beginning of this movie how thinking about how emotions working in your head was messing you up, and all I want to say is Inside Out 2 made me have an existential crisis. It was absolutely amazing and is now one of my favorite movies of all time.

    This movie is probably my favorite movie of all time. When I watched it, it hit me in a way no other could. The simple way in which it helped to explain how not just our emotions but our minds as a whole worked was so well done. And whenever I look into the behind the scenes, it's wild to see just how much they committed to making this film. And when Bing Bong disappeared, it hit me right in the gut-as someone who had tons of imaginary friends growing up. Nowadays, I can only remember one of them...

    If you do intend to see the second one then it’s best to see it through since there are two extra scenes at the end

    Funny you should mention Riley’s emotions being male and female. There’s actually a theory that she’s nonbinary(I use the word she because it’s not confirmed). Because nonbinary people are born that way, her emotions were mixed from the beginning. Whether it’s intentional or not, because it’s Disney it will never be fully explained.

    So I grew up in San Francisco and I’m blown away by how accurate they got the buildings. Riley’s middle school is James Lick Middle School, a school in the Noe Valley area.  The ice rink doesn’t exist but that area is called the Presidio and there are a bunch of buildings that look like that there. The Presidio is essentially an abandoned military base turned park. All the buildings are old military warehouses and barracks that have been repurposed for the public. Also the Walt Disney Family Museum is there. Go figure.

    Yes! I love Inside Out! It's tied with Coco and Inside Out 2 for my favorite Pixar movie (tbh, probably top favorite movies in general). This visual metaphor is such an excellent and impressive representation of how we interpret/learn to interpret what's going on around us and how we feel about it. I'm really looking forward to y'all's reaction to Inside Out 2!

    Every time I see something about this movie, all I can think of is that reporter who was talking about it and goes “it really makes you feel like you’re inside this teenage girl!”

    This is my favorite Pixar movie, so I've been waiting for this reaction for over a year now (just checked dates on discord, that's actually true lol), and I'm glad to say your guys' reaction did not disappoint. I especially love that boom noticed that what Riley's mom was asking from Riley was a lot to ask for a kid, because that part always resonated with me. I also appreciate that you guys gave Sadness more benefit of the doubt than she usually gets from reactors, hate for her can get overblown sometimes. One thing I do wanna mention though, is that sadness isn't connected to depression in the way that most people think; and that in the movie, it's depicted as the absence of emotion and not overwhelming sadness. The detail that sadness is actually what stops Riley's period of depression by letting her cry is an important one; As someone who lives with BPD and who struggles with bouts of depression on-and-off, crying can really help in regulating your mind.
