Love Viserys I, and I think he's the best character of the show so far. And fuck Daemon and the traitor (the Valeryian fellow).
Raiders and pirates ransacking ships in international waters? A foreign government sponsoring said pirates? A government reluctant to attack and rout the pirates at their base of operations? Sounds like the Barbary Wars in the early 1800s...“Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute” still holds true in US politics today...
Viserys I is one of the best characters in the show - he reminds me a lot of Qui Gon Jinn, someone who thinks beyond the politics of his own profession.
Otto wants to be Tywin Lannister so bad lmao
So I think y'all said you're watching on the 4K Blu-ray? I'm begging you to check out the eps on the HBO app, because there's something going on with the discs and both eps so far are like as dark as The Long Night. Everything looks like 20% darker and more washed out than it should be, and I just checked side-by-side with the scenes in the sept with all those candles and the steps on Dragonstone. The app versions are bright and warm and rich with color and the discs look like they're STRUGGLING.
So Daemon’s sword “Dark Sister” is valerian steel. The moment he unsheathed it and the sound reverberated through the mountain, that’s when his dragon heard its specific sound it came to his side.
I just noticed Cristen Cole mentioned a Dondarrion, who had to have been the ancestor of Beric Dondarrion from the GoT series
-13:35 How old is your dad? Is he bee keeping age? Rhaenyra I wanna F your dad lol
There are definitely some romantic vibes going on between Rhaenyra and Alicent. I don't know if they're reciprocated, but I thought it was pretty clear Rhaenyra felt more than friendship. So it's not only that she had no idea Alicent was being groomed to be queen and her father said nothing, but ALSO that he announced in front of a room full of men "Oh and I'm marrying your crush."
Regarding the Velaryons, they are around in the asoiaf books, but never included in the show. Cersei actually names a Velaryon to the Small Council and iirc, he absconds with quite a few of the realms ships. They're a minor house at this time however, no longer the richest in tbe realm as the title is taken over by the Lannisters. Looking forward to the upcoming eps!
I want to divulge a bit of non-spoiler information. Just some relevant information for what isn't so clear.
To start off, people didn't like thos new intro. What it shows is blood flowing through the city of old Valerya. It is meant to show the bloodline of the current characters and their relations. It is not very clear, but you can see the blood flow to points with the cigils of houses to show links like marriage. People were also disappointed that the song remained the same early on since they wanted something new to show this is something more than a game of thrones prequel but over time people recognized that the song is too iconic to change.
Secondly, a reminder that the narrow sea is the body of water between Westeros and Essos. King's landing is around the middle of Westeros on the East coast. Not too far across the narrow sea, south east of of King's landing, on the continent of Essos, are the free cities. They are the group of cities that Daenerys spent seasons taking over and ruling. Off of the shore from them is an arrangement of small islands that cover a large portion of the narrow sea. They are called the step stones. Travel between those islands is key for fast and efficient trade, but a bunch of outlaws and pirates have settled there to disrupt and take over ships passing through. That is what Corlys Velaryon is angry about and wants something done about their trading routes.
Another thing, house Velaryon comes from old Valerya, just like the Targaryens. Valerya was a sub continent south of Essos, in which the Valeryans, a bunch of different houses, ruled. They were, from what we know, the most advanced civilization in the region. Not every Valeryan house tamed or could bond with dragons, but the Targaryen were not the only one. About 300 years before game of thrones, the Velaryon and Targaryen both decided to go on and settle elsewhere, which lead to Aegon the first and his two sisters to conquer Westeros with their dragons. At the same times the doom of Valerya happened, which left the subcontinent devastated. Everyone inhabiting it died out and it's crust fractured, letting way for a large sea to take place.
Also, dragonstone is not far from King's landing, only about a day of boat travel. The driftwood throne is not much further in the same direction approximately. It is on deiftmark, a larger island with a proper small city with a large dock, mostly populated by seamen and home to Corlys' fleet. It also has a castle, tho, it is not a straight up fortress like dragonstone is.
Lastly, yeah, the beginning of the show is much more of a set up for what is to come. Much more time passes between episode, so buckle up for a lot of time skips and surprises.
The Free Cities were not the cities that Daenerys conquered. The free cities we got to see in GoT were Braavos, where Arya was, where the Iron Bank was, and the Giant of Braavos. Pentos is another one, I think that's where Dany started out at in the first season with her brother before marrying Drogo. And the city that was partially built on a bridge that Tyrion and Varys traveled through was Volantis, and it's the closest to Slaver's Bay, which is where Dany was conquering cities
Lmao I forgot Sir Criston Cole was the one who whooped Daemon's ass in that tournament
-What’s even more interesting about Viserys being a diplomatic and pacifistic King is that he was also the last dragonrider of Balerion the Black Dread; literally the largest dragon in Targaeryan history, and the one with the biggest kill count.
-I always read Alicent’s expression when Viserys told her about the marriage proposal to Laena as sort of relief in feeling like she wouldn’t have to marry him herself; like she later says she’ll only visit Viserys later if Otto wanted him to.
-I’ll also only say this since I know you guys have a backlog up to atleast next episode, and it’s also been mentioned in last episode, but “the second son” is an interesting recurring theme so far. Like Otto is a second son so he doesn’t rule over land which I think shows a lot of his motivations. It’s especially ironic considering that means his motivations aren’t unlike Daemon’s or Corlys.
-I think Otto has a pretty similar disposition to Tywin to be honest, the biggest difference is that Tywin faced normal lords, and Otto faced dragon riders. Also Charles Dance’s gravitas and Otto actually has fondness for his children
One more thing, Tommen is 8-10 in the books, and does marry Margaery, but they actually haven’t… coupled… yet.
Let’s go stepping more into the House of the Dragon world. For tracking purposes we currently have 2 confirmed dragon riders in Daemon - Caraxes and Rhaenyra - Syrax
We also have 3 dragons confirmed by name so far; Dreamfyre who laid Baelon’s egg, was not confirmed to have a rider or not. While Laena mentioned Balerion who’s dead, and Vhagar who’s still roaming.
Viserys the king is 40.
The new Robin Hood with Sean Bean is pretty good! It feels like they are really building up something cool. And it has some GoT vibes with the houses and the names. So if people are lacking a medieval times like fantasy series in their life, go check it out!
Thrones Thursday baby!
