I mean fuck King’s Landing, I’m sorry but that city is like Gotham, it needs a neutron purge to get fixed. I’ll stand by much Queen lmao. Jokes aside, yeah this could’ve been way better shown if the season had more episodes or as HBO wanted more fucking seasons.

How is loyalty more important to her than the pushing back of her opinion when she literally did everything everyone ever told her and everything went to shit each time she listened to them?

The last leg of this show is like a Falling In Reverse song circa 2018 or later. It's incredibly well produced, some talented musicians are involved in the recording process, but not even Max Martin and Amadeus himself could possibly compensate for the lyrics. In this case, the lyrics being the writing. It feels like they blatantly just hate women. Like the message here seems to be that women are crazy, your abuse makes you who you are as woman, you can't escape your bloodline no matter how hard you try, and even the most morally idealistic woman in the world will crack under the pressure of leadership and just burn the it all to the ground, literally. And at the same time, they tried to humanize a monster in Cersei and they tried to make a monster of a great leader in Dany, and they failed so spectacularly. Why? Because it was a terrible idea to make such changes to begin with. LET'S JUST TWIST IT AND MAKE YOU HATE IT! I don't care about any of it. I wanted to care so much. Narratively, this episode sucked so incredibly hard that I don't even care that my favorite character survived. None of the characters matter anymore. I don't care what happens to any of them going forward. As far as I'm concerned, all the real characters died when they ran out of source material. I'm not even out of criticisms here. I could go on forever. I hate the ending for Jaime. The message there is that people never really change and character growth is a lie. Such absolute dogshit. I'm so serious when I say that people who like this season don't value good writing at all. The people who like this season are just fans of spectacle. Michael-fucking-Bay-core. Which is fine if you just want some mindless action to turn off your mind to. But that's not what Game of Thrones is. This season is crap. Fuck the assholes who wrote it. I've never hated writers more than I hate them. Actually, I don't hate any other TV writers that I'm aware of. Just these two heartless money-grubbing chucklefucks. Props to those involved with the music and all visual elements. Benioff and Weiss can rot in oblivion. The end. I don't want to keep talking about it. It makes me angry.

If they had called Quentin and said, “Hey buddy, we don’t have the books — how should we end it?”, even if Quentin were taking a shit at that moment, he would’ve written a better ending than the entire Game of Thrones screenwriting team. That’s why it’s so bad.

while im glad you do get more enjoyment from the show. there is still so much wrong with the show. lets start with when tyrion frees Jaime from chains. he says when tyrion tells him to get cersie to surrender if not for the citizens of kings landing. his response was "I never really cared for them much." when the reason he got the name king slayer because he killed his king to save those people. next is the bells. not only did danny go crazy after them. but going to preious seasons varis saidd. "I never liked the bells, they mean death." the bells never meant surrender before in the series. that was just made up. and making up things is how they decided to kill cersie. while it technically stayed true to the books fortune telling of her dying in her brothers hands. which is why cersie one, loves jamie because if jamie loves her he wouldn't kill her, and its why she was always against tyrion because she believed the fortune meant it was going to be tyrion killing her. when most people in the books read it as jamies final ark. going from king slayer to queen slayer because cersie goes against him. and i am not mad at all for danny going crazy. that seems like a fitting end to her ark. but this series over the last 2 seasons really put the pedal to the metal with her flipping.

I've heard the argument plenty of times that people are just unhappy because they didn't get a happy ending. But I don't think that was ever the problem. My problem is the characters not being true to themselves.

This happened to a lesser extent in season 5 when Littlefinger, the cleverest SOB in Westeros, suddenly became brain dead with his strategies. This culminated in, what I thought, was his unsatisfactory death in season 7. Would have been so much sweeter if Sansa's arc ended with her outsmarting Littlefinger at the top of his game.

Things got worse from there. They made Tyrion, a great player of the game, a moron, where his every plan failed. Dany for some reason rewards him with the Handship despite this, then constantly berates him for his failures without taking the Handship away. There's also Varys, one of my favorite characters, the freaking MASTER OF WHISPERERS, who apparently forgot how to whisper and committed treason pretty much out in the open. And the worst example of character assassination: Jaime. His whole origin was that he turned Kingslayer in order to save the entire population of King's Landing from the Mad King. But now suddenly he "never cared for" the people of King's Landing?! Doesn't make sense. We had a 7-season journey of slowly unravelling Jaime and seeing that he does indeed have honor, and that he was simply poisoned by his sister and father, only to have that entire arc fall to rubble for no good reason. His arc should have ended in him KILLING Cersei in order to save the population of King's Landing from a Mad Queen! Maybe even dying in the process himself. Would have been a tragic, but fitting end.

Funnily enough, Dany's turn to Mad Queen I completely accept. It could have used full seasons in 7 and 8 to properly lay out, but I think there was enough foundation there to justify it. She had always been too wrapped up in her own destiny since season 2 and her "right" to the throne, even after she found out she DIDN'T have the right to the throne.

because Jon was the rightful heir to the throne. The first bon son is the heir. When the mad king got killed by Jaime, the heir was Rhaegar Targaryen so he got the crown. When Robert killed Rhaegar, his son Aegon aka Jon was the heir since Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark married before Jon was born.

So Jon is the rightful King.

Even the whole book series is named after Jon. "A song of ice and fire". Jon is the song of ice and fire since his parents are a Stark (ice) and a Targaryen (fire) and he is named after the first King.

This is a great summary of many of the issues I had with how the show ended.

Tyrion's character is especially frustrating on this rewatch for me, as I don't remember him being such a terrible advisor.

And why is Varys telling Tyrion that he needs to find a way to get Dany to listen? Like, dude, that's what she's been doing this whole time! Look where it's got her! Blunder after blunder that made her fumble a three-dragon lead, lose Dorne, lose Highgarden, lose the Iron Islands, lose a large part of her army in the North, and both Jorah and Missendei. So many of Daenerys' advantages have been wiped out because she listened to him, I don't know how he still has his head.

They act like she's being incredibly unreasonable and erratic, but I certainly don't feel that as an audience member. The breadcrumbs are certainly there, and it feels like a satisfying and reasonable arc for her character, but more work needed to be done to get that result I feel.

I've enjoyed this rewatch of the series, the first for me since it aired. I thought it would be tainted by how I remember this season, but it was a lot more fun than I expected. Those early seasons really are fantastic. They definitely needed a few more seasons to tell this properly though, shame the producers rushed it. I wonder if any of the actors were eager to wind it up too, never heard much on that.

I feel like what gets me the most with this so is how unbelievably easy it would be to do better and still have everyone end up in the same place. Like, right off the bat, send Jaime after Cersei to convince her to surrender, but oh no, she's too far gone, she's willing to let the city burn rather than admit she fucked up, so *Jaime* has to kill her. You can even still drop a castle on his head after if you want to. Easily half the problems with the episode fixed with like....two lines of dialogue changed.

My wife and I have a mythic theory that the white horse was the God of Death saying "not today" for Arya, after she killed The Night King and saved the world from eternal death, which--through lack of living--would have nullified Death, it would've made him pointless if there was no one left to live and therefore die. The horse was Death giving Arya his favor, and you can't change my goddamn mind.

I never had an issue with Dany's turn and burning down King's Landing. The only problem is that D&D rushed it. Also, the hill I will die on is that Jamie should have died from Euron's stab wound on his way to Cersei. Arya finds him and takes his face. Arya as Jamie then finds Cersei who is glad to see him and fake Jamie kills her. Cersei dies thinking Jamie has turned on her. That is the natural progression of the story we were being told. The argument that Cersei's death by rubble may be more "realistic" is ridiculous. This is a show with dragons and ice zombies. We left realistic behind a while back

Now that we’re here, I can talk Euron in the books. They completely butcher him(and the Ironborn in general). Euron is introduced much earlier in the story than he is in the show. The scene in season 7 where he first appears and throws his brother off the top of the castle? That happens so early that Robb is still alive. Although we don’t actually have a scene of it. We just hear about it happening. It’s not even confirmed that Euron did it though a lot of characters assume he did because he conveniently shows up right after when they’re trying to pick a new king. Euron in the books has one eye and commands a ship called “The Silence”. Why is it called that? Because he cut out the tongues of His entire crew. Euron also wasn’t exiled for starting the rebellion. Balon started the rebellion. Euron was exiled for seducing(or possibly raping) the wife of his younger brother Victarion(who is completely absent from the show) and getting her pregnant. She was one of Victarian’s salt wives(women who the Ironborn kidnap on raids and forcibly marry) and Victarion beat her to death when he found out she was pregnant with his brother’s child. He actually truly loved her apparently because he was sobbing as he was killing her and never touched another woman again. Balon had forbidden any mention of her on the Iron Islands in order to spare Victarion the heartache(Balon is actually a pretty good brother tbh). They exile Euron because he’s Balon’s brother and kinslaying is one of the most heinous crimes imaginable for them. Even if he ordered someone else to kill Euron, they recognize that as essentially the same thing. Euron actually has/had eight brothers: Balon, Victarion, Aeron, Harlon, Quenton, Donel, Robin and Urrigon. Quenton, Donel and Robin all died in infancy(more on that later) and Harlon died as a young child. Victarion is completely cut from the show and Aeron is actually in the show but they never address him by name on screen. He’s the priest who baptizes Theon in season 2 and oversees Balon’s funeral in season 7. Urrigon died as a teenager. That story is really tragic. Urrigon and Aeron were playing the finger dance(a game where they throw axes at each other and try to either catch them or jump over them. Dumb Viking shit, y’know) and Urrigon loses his fingers. Instead of treating the amputation, Urrigon’s stepmother orders the maester to sew the fingers back on. This causes an infection that kills him. Balon, Victarion and Euron are away with their father at the time fighting in Robert’s Rebellion. Their father dies in battle so when they return, Balon is in charge. Upon learning what happened to Urrigon, Balon ordered his stepmother to cut the maester’s fingers off and sew them back on. They then watched as he slowly died of infection. Lady Piper was spared because she was pregnant with their sibling but later died in childbirth and the child was stillborn. Now….the kids that died in infancy. The sixth book isn’t out but George has released sample chapters. These may or may not be canon depending on whether they make it into the final draft but there’s some dark stuff in there involving Euron, Aeron, Urrigon, Robin and Harlon so I’m gonna talk about it. As I said, Robin died in infancy and Harlon died as a child. In a sample chapter, Euron admits that he’s actually the one who killed Harlon and Robin. He also admits to killing Balon in this chapter. So he’s a kinslayer of three brothers, two of which were children at the time. Harlan’s death in particular required significant malice to carry out. Harlan was already dying of greyscale. Euron went to his bedroom and pinched his nose shut and made him suffocate. The greyscale had already reached his mouth so he couldn’t breath through it or call for help. Another thing that’s revealed in these previews is that Euron would repeatedly molest Aeron and Urrigon during their childhoods. Meaning Urrigon’s life was getting molested by his brother over and over and then unceremoniously dying of infection at the age of 15. Truly just a tragic life. There’s also a fan theory that Euron may have molested Theon when he was a child but the evidence is kinda sparse and they’re reaching imo. The evidence is that Theon is scared of Euron and….thats it. That’s the evidence. Theon is scared of the guy that everyone else is also scared of so obviously Euron molested him. It’s a stupid theory.

I get that this is all disturbing and no one really wants to see this on screen but the thing is, they took a character who’s supposed to be a major threat and villain and just made him a punk.

As I said I haven't finished this so I'm throwing shit out there. Jon and Dani are going to kill each other and it will finally be the end of the old kings bloodline.

Jaime: “I never really cared for them, innocent or otherwise.”

He killed a king to save all those people from burning alive. I would’ve actually been ok with this storyline of Jaime going back to Cersei because it fits his character but what doesn’t fit his character is a complete disregard for innocent life. The only time he has ever been willing to sacrifice an innocent is in defense of Cersei(Bran) and even then, not a mass sacrifice. Even with Bran, he was debating what he had to do in that scene by asking how old Bran was. He wouldn’t have asked that if he wasn’t looking for a reason not to do it.

I think (and I could be misremembering) the actual catalyst for Jaime stabbing the Mad King was when he was told to "bring me your father's head" but then again I also kinda read it as Jaime deliberately saying all the wrong things to make it easier for Brienne to hate him/let him go, so idk. Either way I do share the disappointment of Jaime's character regression.

I love seeing people blame the show runners for where some of the characters ended up in their part of the story. Everyone always says about how George didn’t have anything to do with the later seasons, but he already told them early on the way it would end for certain characters. People really expected some kind of fan service ending from the person who chopped off Ned Starks head in book 1, just because the fandom got attached to certain characters who made it to the last season. Rewatching the show if you really look you can see many moments where Dany showed signs of what was deep down. Even all the way back to the witch in season 1 when she talks to Dany about how she “saved” her and her child would’ve been a brutal warlord. Her decisions always felt somewhat just from the viewers perspective even when she showed subtle hints of indifference to all kinds of terrible things. She was presented from the beginning in a way that makes you pity her so when she finally begins to gain power everyone wants her to win. It’s honestly brilliant writing on Martin’s part and it’s a shame so many people don’t recognize that. Don’t get me wrong I still think the last season could’ve been way better and the show runners dropped the ball in many ways, but I feel like people who complain about the direction the story went forgot that it was never meant to be what we wanted or thought made the most sense. And yes the show runners took out many things including entire characters and plot points from even the books we do have now, but I think many people blame them for everything even when some of it is the way it was meant to be by the author. Looking forward to your reactions to the last episode and overall thoughts!

Most of the complaints I have seen about the show, and specifically Dany's story, isn't because she went mad queen, it's because of how fast it happened in these last few seasons. Yes, there were some hints from season 1, but it was like a steady decline then suddenly a drop off. I've actually seen more people like you who are addressing the people that wanted her to be a good ruler, than I've seen people actually disappointed she wasn't a good ruler.

When it first aired I saw a lot of people who were upset she went mad and didn’t understand why. As the years have passed more people have come to understand it. There were subtle hints in every season, but the plunge into actual madness was definitely too fast. I think if they took more time they could’ve done a better job. They rushed to end it. Personally for me my problem is less with the story and more with how it was executed. They could’ve taken more time to flesh out things and explain the reasoning for certain parts of the overall end plot. I blame the show runners for rushing the ending, but I am ok with how it ended story wise. That’s just my opinion though. I understand why some people hated it.

Of course not look at how people reacted to it. He has been stalling for how long now? I’m not saying it’s not possible they changed her ending or anyone else’s, but I think people give the story too much credit for their downfall. Many things could’ve been done better and many things were already missing entirely, but there was still a hand in the overall story direction early on enough for them to know where certain things were going and many people overlook the earlier signs amongst her character growth. The fans put her on a pedestal and that’s how it was intended to be, but she was never a purely good ruler. She did many just things, but even her decision to convince Khal Drogo to invade Westeros led to the slaughter and enslavement of people. She was often blind to the destruction created by her own pursuit of power even when she genuinely meant well. I definitely think they could have done a better job with the show and how they executed the ideas, but I personally don’t hold anything against the direction of the story. And if he does end up writing something completely different I’ll still be happy that he finished it 🤣

We are meant to feel bad for her from the beginning so when she gets power it feels like the right direction, but so many times we see her show another side. They did a great job making the viewer empathize with her just enough to overlook the moments of darkness peeking through. When she claimed to have “saved” the witch. Wanting Khal Drogo to invade the Seven Kingdoms. Almost giving birth to the “Stallion that Mounts the World”. And those were all only in season 1. She never once during any of those moments showed accountability for what her actions were going to cause she could only see her personal goals. Sure she freed slaves and did many great things, but they were all simply steps in the road to power and the iron throne.

She was always entitled and immature. She always felt entitled to the throne, even after learning about John. She had zero reason to do half the things she does, and she cant control her emotions. I think the thing I love most about this episode is the way Clegane (The hound) died. He died in fire, the very thing he feared for most of his life, to take out the person who made him afraid of it in the first place. I quite liked this episode for this season, but I definitely have my issues with it. The bad plot points can kind of be explained by "war is unfair and unexpected". But I hate how they ruined so many characters without much of a reason. The last episode is by far the worst one in my opinion, it just doesn't have any explanation for the way the plot goes. In my opinion it ruins pretty much the whole series (which I can obviously explain more once it's finished)

In hindsight, I def think this episode was not as bad as at the time. I def felt the same as y'all when this first aired, but in hindsight I still dislike how quick this all felt. Like we needed a few more episodes in Season 7 and Season 8 of Dany having issues with Westerosi lords. All we had in the show was a hardened commander (Tarleys), Cercei's Betrayal in the war against Winter... and got ignored at a dinner party. I do think we needed a bit more... same with Varys, I think he was not as clever as before when going about betraying Dany...

I honestly think there were strong moments this season, and I honestly like the finale, but man when you think about a lot of the decisions and weaker moments its rough.

I’m curious to know your guys thoughts on Jamie. A lot of people say he had one of the most fumbled character arcs in tv history. He was a lot of people fav character in the show and then the writers ruined him near the end.

I actually like getting back to Cersei and protecting her. Well I don’t like it but it’s part of his character. The part that gets me is “I never cared for innocent people.” That’s NOT in character for him.

"she can't die from rubble!" *10 min later* xD

This is the episode I was waiting for cause I am so so so so so mad. lmao. I do agree there are wonderfull scenes and storylines. I am not even mad that she torched the city I just don't agree with the why. They gave Tyrion a complete new character. I don't think he would EVER be so blinded by Family love. Specialy his sister? Jamie yes but not his sister. He forgets so much stratagy he knew and had in other seasons. and that is what leeds to so much loss, that in turn let's Daenerys go bonkers. the loss of the second Dragon was also bullshit... you tell me you can't see all thos ships from way up there?? really? Even if she is distracted there where so many and they were right there in the corner of her vision. Or even the Dragons not seeing all those ships?

Dany has been thru so, so much. I know this adds to it and it would be a valid reason to let her snap but not with this rushed set up. Also making her make the decission, of love or fear, based on John rejecting her? I don't know. It is just so sad and rushed I would have loved to see a slow desend into madness. And they were setting it up -kinda- from season 6. But rushed and for me not understandible reasons. Or to put it better decissions that I really don't see characters making based on established developments.

Unfortunetly I see Jamie making the dessicion for Cersei. Still could have let her die alone tbh.

^^' went on a little ramble lmao.

I loved this show so much. I hate the rushing and the jumping, decissions make no sense. I want to read the books when (if) they are all out.

My problem with this episode is they made it feel like Jon was the catalyst for her losing it when he couldn't love her the way she wanted. Also, it's not believable that she would kill women and children for no reason when she won. That isn't in her character, but they could have took the time to make it believable if they were going to go there. What would have made more sense is if they saved the second dragon's death for this episode. Watching a second dragon/child die during the battle and torching the city because of that and continuing after the bells toll would make more sense.

There were theories before the season came out that there was something in the book that predicted Cersei's death by a younger sibling. People wondered if Jamie would kill her as the younger twin or if Arya would kill her with Jamie's face. That death just like the Night King was disappointing.

Yes, the same prophecy that told her she would marry the king, have 3 children while he had however many, and all her children would die, also told her she would be killed by her younger brother. She assumes that means Tyrion, but lots of people theorized it actually meant Jamie since he is also younger than her

Jamie saying he never cared about the innocents in kings landing is some of the worst writing ever. His entire reason for killing the mad king and becoming the “king slayer” was to save all of those innocents from being burned😭 makes no sense for him to say that

I think I agree, the last episode was a good episode. I think the only problem with having an episode like the last episode, and the first episode of this season, was the fact there were only 6 in this whole season. Episodes 1 & 3 were great episodes, if these last two seasons weren't so short, and weren't the last two seasons but instead had 4ish more seasons. Except for some stuff that happened at the end of the last episode, which is extra funny when you watch the behind the scenes videos

  55. sguy90

Honestly, I don't know for certain, but it felt like the show runners and writers had a favoritism towards Arya, giving her all the cool moments. Also struggling to write other characters well without George RR Martin. It's a pain really, since a lot of people thought that Dany would eventually be a mad ruler but the show doesn't do a good job at building up to it. It tries to at certain points, but other points they paint her as a savior and it gives a lot of mixed messages. The later two seasons then tries to speadrun that arc for her and it fails unfortunately.

There may have been some questionable writing on how we got to this point or Dany's switch being too rushed etc but man this episode is so sick. The Jamie Cersei thing also kinda made sense, they've made it clear that he does everything for Cersei, I personally always predicted Jamie was gonna kill Cersei himself and become "Queenslayer"

Re: y'all rooting for Jaime; what this season made clear most to me is, that these aren’t the characters I was rooting for in the early seasons, these are just their incoherent caricature versions who are there to be part of the plot they wanted, not the trajectory that would’ve actually made sense. Jaime turns from the man who broke his honor to save millions of lives to the man who sacrificed his chance to save those people just so he could save his own personal version of the mad king. Daenerys is supposed to be the merciless mad queen willing to murder civilians by the thousands so she could liberate the people, while also being the person who would just imprison the guy who killed her dad and his incompetent brother. Sandor’s supposed to be the guy who convinces Arya to turn back from revenge knowing what it’s done to him, while also being the guy who accompanied her from Winterfell to King’s Landing AND the guy who went and tried to revenge kill the Mountain anyway. Not a single one of these characters are left unscathed.

It's commendable how positive you guys are, but wow is this episode bad. Dany sacrificing the innocents in Cersei's path would be one thing, but she decides to take the scenic route to kill everyone but Cersei. The writers wanted to remove any moral ambiguity, so they made her snap abruptly when she had already won. Arya had the most plot armor I've ever seen, so many back-to-back cuts of her somehow being the sole survivor. Euron losing the fight to one-handed Jaime makes him seem even more pathetic than he already did.

I don't like Cercie ketting off easy, but I do like the fact the twins die in each others arms. Jaimy's only fault was loving his twisted sister more than his own honor and it makes him likeable and not likeable at the same time. I do think it's a beautiful moment if only they weren't twins.
