Sarah Jane Smith turning up was actually a pretty big deal at the time, as not only was she a very popular companion from the old series, but her appearance in the story confirmed that the new show was a continuation of the original, rather than it just being a modern reboot.
She was a companion for both the Third and the Fourth Doctor and was present when he regenerated, which is why she's not confused about him looking different. The reason she left was because the Doctor was being called back home by the other Time Lords, and he couldn't bring her with him (things hadn't gone great the last time he did that). So he dropped her off...in the wrong country. Oops.

Stephen Moffat's obsession with sex always brings The Girl in the Fireplace down a little bit for me. Whenever they talk about dancing, it's supposed to be a euphemism for sex, and that just feels so out of place for both the show and characters. I always feel like Stephen Moffat didn't care about fitting the themes and storylines of RTD's doctor who, like he had his own ideas of what he wanted to turn the show into, and was willing to inject that into his own episodes even if it doesn't fit the larger design of the show. There's nothing inherently bad about his vision, it just feels pretty arrogant and disrespectful the way he inserts himself without a ton of respect for the showrunner's vision

Steven Moffat is also a Rose hater because she was lower class and therefore not good enough for the Doctor so naturally I love her even more… that being said Steven Moffat did write some iconic Doctor who and Doctor Who “Monsters”

Loved Sarah Jane Smith in the knew but after watching the old Dr Who it just made me love her even more. This was THE episode that made me watch the older stuff
