I guess we can tell you now, that Ironwood is meant to be "The Tin Man who lost his humanity", all of those in Ozpin's circle are based on the Wizard of Oz.

Not sure if anyone pointed it out to you, but like all of the Ace Ops, Clover was based on an Aesop fable: The Kingfisher. The moral of which perfectly describes his character's fate.
‘Tis many a wise man’s hap, while he is providing against one danger to fall into another: and for his very providence to turn to his destruction.

The way that each of the Ace Ops were defeated as well matches their fables stories. Marrow tried using his power on both Weiss and the Knight, the dog and his reflection with the bone wanting both. Vine and Elm didn't work together, resulting in their loss. And Harriet went against Ruby out of competitive drive when she would of been better against anyone else, thus losing the same way the cocky rabbit did.

The Qrow and clover fight really shows Tyrian’s intelligence. It’s easy to think he’s just a dumb maniac but he’s a sociopath and, like many sociopaths, he’s great at reading and manipulating people.
He instantly pegs Clover’s instance on arresting Qrow as the crack that’ll bring him home free, as it were, and, as such, uses Qrow’s want to take him down against the both of them.
Notice how he never attacks Qrow so the annoyance at Clover’s interference will build quicker and makes sure Qrow stays in the forefront as much as possible.
Clover, for his part, seems to notice the plan near the end. That Tyrian is playing them both, trying to weaken them so they’ll be easier to take out and escape from, but, by that point, it’s too late and someone has to die. Hence his “someone had to take the fall”.

My only issue with the Clover Qrow Tyrian fight is the last punch Qrow threw, cause that was when Clover had Tyrian relatively 'under control' (tied up in his fishin line). It was Qrow's punch that allowed the line to go slack and for Tyrian to get away. Funnily enough, it was two unfortunate things happening in succession that caused Clover's death. Qrow's punch (which broke his aura), and Clover's aura breaking (which ended his passive good luck). Also, you could count the tunnel vision Qrow and Clover had for each other in that moment as well, since Qrow didn't notice Tyrian get out of his bonds, run to pick up Qrow's weapon, and then run back to hide behind Clover, but that could also be explained by anime physics lol

You can see Tyrian looked unconscious when the fight resumed so that explains why no one noticed him get out of his bonds.
As for the stab, remember Tyrian is extremely fast so it’s anime speed that’s to blame there.

I can enjoy the final bit of the Clover Qrow Tyrian fight though, since it's given me a little bit more to think about now! I remember a thing lil Ruby said wayy back in V1 "[Weapons] are so cool! They're a extension of our souls (or selves? i can't fully recall), a part of us!" So Qrow disregarding his weapon COULD be symbolizing throwing a part of himself away to continue the fight with his fists. Tyrian picking up Qrow's weapon is Qrow playing into what Tyrian wanted. And Clover getting killed by Qrow's weapon by Tyrian is the entire fight itself. An unwilling betrayal. :)

fun fact: if you let the menu for the Volume 3 Blue ray Idle eventually the music will have a sinister tone wile showing this battlefield amoung the diffrent arenas in the Amity Colliseum meaning that this was forshadowed as far back as the Blu Ray menues for Volume 3
I only realized this very recently myself as I was talking to my nephew after showing them Volume three and eventually the music change caught our attention and I noticed the Arena and I'm like "Wow- they really forshadowed that this far in advance huh?" and they just look at me like "Wait... after all there is there serriously another tournament arc???"

I'm glad you guys understood why the characters acted like they did. Sure it was a sucky situation that could have been avoided, but it fits in how the characters think. This whole season all the ace ops have basically said you don't question orders. You just follow them. All except Marrow, which makes since since he's the youngest one. He isn't as 'yes manny' as all the others. Even Elm said the 'you don't need to understand order, just follow them' in episode 11. Because to them, and Ironwood, it's all about loyalty. Blind faith in your leader. Clover was the same way. He will prioritize orders over everything else.
The other thing is that Clover is incredibly cocky, which makes since. His semblance is good luck. Things just work out well for him. He most likely thought he could take Tyrian down himself after he arrested Qrow. While Qrow knows better, and is used to having the odds against him. He has a more survival mindset.

As Raptor mentioned, Caleb Hyles is the singer for the song playing during the Watts/Ironwood fight. He's a YouTube singer who mostly makes covers, and back in the day made quite a few covers of RWBY songs, also managing to get Casey Lee WIlliams (singer for most RWBY songs) in one or two of them. So he was quite known in the RWBY community iirc, and it eventually lead to him getting to sing "Hero" (the fight song). You have NO idea how EXCITED I was to learn that! When that episode came out, I was so happy for him.

One thing I'll say, is that a lot of people criticize RWBY, especially Ruby, of lying to Ironwood about the lamp and Salem, about them being hypocrites. However, one thing I think is important, is that Ruby never actually was overly mad about Ozpin, it was Yang, Weiss, Qrow, and Blake who were mad. Ruby immediately prioritized the "plan" and getting the Lamp to Atlas, remaining focused while the others lost to the Apathy and emotions. In many ways, I think it shows that she wasn't necessarily mad that Ozpin hid things, but that he didn't have a plan.
Now, without Oz, she's trying to do "what she thinks is right" and whether "it makes me no different from Oz." And Qrow is also right, she is trying to make sure she can truly trust people before telling the truth, like how Oz was (even though I think its clear by the time we meet him, he never truly trusted anyone anymore, after too many "Lionhearts").

Ahhh even years later Clover's death still makes me so angry. Clover not prioritizing arresting the literal serial killer over arresting Qrow makes no sense. Teaming up with Tyrian wasn't a good move on Qrow's part, but if he hadn't it would have been a lost battle for him anyway because he'd still be fighting a 2v1, and I doubt that Clover would have been able to take down Tyrian by himself after they took out Qrow.
I adored his and Qrow's relationship. If you listen to the song Bad Luck Charm (which plays during the Tyrian vs Qrow fight in V$), you know that Qrow's self-esteem is through the fucking floor due to his semblance. It was so nice to see him have a connection with someone, Ruby and Oz not counting since it's family/power imbalance. Clover telling him to not beat himself up over his Semblance, the scene in the car when Clover calls him out for his self-deprecating, watching them form a genuine relationship, seeing Qrow legitimately happy for the first time in the series.
Aaand it's stripped away from him. Poor guy can't catch a break.

A lot of people complain a TON about the Qrow, Clover, Tyrian fight, so you’re not alone there. The thought process is that Tyrians aura was basically depleted when he was captured so Qrow is the higher priority to capture on Clovers list.
But if you pay close attention Qrow and Tyrian don’t actually “team up” against Clover. Qrow figures he needs to disarm Clover if he hopes to get to Tyrian since Clover is determined to get Qrow first, and while Tyrian is shown to occasionally “help” Qrow during the fight, Qrow still takes every opportunity to throw a punch Tyrians way when he can.

I don't see clover as Lawful good but as Lawful Stupid, Clover had orders to capture Qrow and Tyrian, just because Tyrian escaped didn't negate the order to capture him (unless he would need new orders and therefore stupid) but at every opportunity went after Qrow over Tyrian.

by the way Ironwood's semblances was explained outside of the series its called Mettle
As a passive Semblance, Mettle was only ever present in the background, essentially acting as the uncompromising aspect of Ironwood's personality. It emboldened him to act swiftly and helped lessen the psychological burden of difficult decisions.
