Me and my bf, at the time, sat and watched this in his dorm and watching Luca and Alberto's interactions and I just out and said "They're gay" and he kept denying it and saying that they're just really good friends and when it got to scenes of Alberto's jealousy is when he finally saw what I was talking about.

As someone said, this has a lot of metaphors for being gay and in the closet. Luca trying something new for the first time with someone who is more experienced being out, The "does your school accept all people?" the hiding the relationship, the running away from home when your parents find out you're gay, them getting caught by the older kid and him beating them up, luca pretending to be straight when alberto comes out because he wasn't ready yet, alberto pretending to be more confident in his sexuality only to be just as scared, etc. It's so well written tbh.

Especially the part of sending Luca away to 'get better' with his uncle aand 'out of all the places for a sea monster to stay' is like when you're gay in a small town that is very homophobic

i love watching straight people watch this lol. They always go "gulia is showing him the stars and they're gonna fall in love" as if Alberto didn't also do that and it's so obvious he has a crush on Luca haha.

Love this movie. Might I recommend the 2009 Astro Boy movie? Was just watching YouTube after finishing this and saw it by chance and it brought back some memories. Don’t know if it’s just nostalgia talking but I think it would be a fun watch

Luca, Elemental, and Turning Red imo are the modern renaissance of pixar movies. Although they're not perfect or as good compared to their older movies, these movies are personal and full of charm. I'm so glad these movies were able to get made and allow their creators to tell their personal stories through movies like these.

Fun fact, a LOT of gay people (me included) interpreted this movie as a coming out allegory. And recently it was confirmed that Luca and Alberto were actually supposed to be love interests, but well...it's Disney so they scrapped the romance confirming scenes. A story board artist recently dropped some cute story board sketches from an ending scene that didn't make the cut / got scrapped. Where at the end of the movie they were going to have a sequence showing the boys reuniting 4 summers in a row ending in a kiss between them. So Booms "Alberto's like Lucus MY man" was actually accurate and Alberto was 100% jealous of Julia taking his attention.
This was a great watch for Pride month~

I saw the storyboards, they were very sweet and I'm happy to see them be published, even if it wasn't in the movie like it should've been, at least we get the comfort of knowing they tried.
